It’s National Nutrition Month. Do you know why protein matters for recovery and mobility?

Protein helps your body repair tissue, rebuild muscle and regain strength after injury or surgery.

Current nutrition guidelines emphasize protein as a key part of recovery, especially for maintaining mobility as we age.

At UT Health San Antonio, our orthopaedic specialists help patients combine the right treatment with the right nutrition to support healing and long-term movement.

UT Health San Antonio is the first program in South Texas to offer osseointegration through its Limb Optimization Program — a two-stage surgery that attaches a prosthetic limb directly to the bone, eliminating the need for a traditional socket and offering improved mobility, comfort and control.

Mike Bellmard of Fulton, Texas, chose UT Health San Antonio after learning about osseointegration and other aspects of the program.

“I had a knee replacement revision, and sadly, that got infected,” Bellmard said. “I went to several doctors, did several treatments, but nobody could kill the infection, so I had to amputate my leg in 2020. It was hard. I couldn’t look down for days because lying there felt weird with just one leg.”

Now, after several visits, Bellmard has found a potential solution and says he is “very excited.”

Noticing a flat spot on your baby’s head can raise questions.
Plagiocephaly, or flat head syndrome, can develop in the first few months of life. In some cases, if not evaluated early, it may affect head shape and facial symmetry. Early assessment helps determine whether treatment is needed and supports appropriate care.

If you have concerns, your pediatrician can help evaluate and guide next steps, including referral when needed.

Our team works with families to assess each child and recommend care based on their individual needs, including cranial remolding. We also strive to make care more accessible by accepting Medicaid and supporting families through treatment with a one-helmet approach.

As diabetes rates continue to rise nationally and in San Antonio—where it remains a leading public health concern—UT Health San Antonio launched the Center for Excellence in Diabetes last summer to unite researchers and clinicians in advancing its study, treatment and prevention.

Carolina Solis-Herrera, MD, founding director, says that the center is already seeing around 1,000 patients per month and that it aims to expand treatment access.

“Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to bring together outstanding clinicians, scientists, educators and innovators to transform how we prevent, understand and treat diabetes for a community like San Antonio,” Solis-Herrera says.

Advancing neurological care requires more than advanced treatments. It requires a philosophy grounded in comprehensive, coordinated support for every stage of care. At the new Center for Brain Health, that commitment shapes everything from diagnosis to long-term management. In movement disorders, UT Health San Antonio is proud to be the first in Texas designated as a Parkinson’s Foundation Comprehensive Care Center, reflecting nationally recognized, team-based care.

That patient-centered approach is intentional. “We’re not only treating conditions, we’re caring for people across the full spectrum of brain health,” said Carlayne Jackson, MD, FAAN, chair of the Department of Neurology at UT Health San Antonio’s Long School of Medicine.
