GSEP GSEP is an independent, democratic, professional association made up of BC/BE emergency medicine physicians, serving patients in San Antonio and Boerne.

Greater San Antonio Emergency Physicians (GSEP) has historical roots dating back to 1980, when Dr. Earl Smith, who passed the first board certification exam ever given for emergency medicine physicians, came to San Antonio. He began putting together the first all board-certified emergency medicine physician group in Texas, with its mission to provide the highest possible level of emergency care. Within several years, the group became a Professional Association called Southwest Texas Methodist Emergency Physicians, which initially had five physician members with 16,000 patient visits per year. Over the next ten years, patient volumes continually increased at the hospital, and the group still continued its practice of only adding residency-trained, board-certified emergency physicians to its ranks. Then in 1995, Methodist Hospital became Methodist Healthcare System through a merger, and three additional hospital emergency department physician groups were gradually merged in. Patient visits totaled in excess of 100,000 per year and the groups number of emergency physicians increased to 23. Over time, the group underwent several more name changes, eventually becoming what is now commonly referred to as GSEP. In February of 2011, GSEP consolidated its services to 4 of the previously held 7 MHS facilities. This allowed GSEP to be right-sized with all providers working the hours they have requested. With more time and energy we were able to dramatically improve our product - providing outstanding emergency care in a timely manner. December 2013, GSEP regained the contract for Emergency Department coverage services at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, and September 2014 GSEP also took on the Emergency Medicine coverage services at the new site of Metropolitan Methodist Emergency Center. GSEP will care for over 200,000 patients this year. Our departments currently rank in the top 10 in at least one of the several categories of excellence that HCA recognizes and tracks. Patients coming to our EDs, on average, see one of our providers in less than 15 minutes.

Emergencies don't wait. Our group's president, Dr. Frolichstein, shared on KSAT 12 & KSAT.com the importance of finding care when urgent situations arise. In April, 1/3 of the average capacity of stroke patients were seen, most likely due to people waiting longer to seek treatment. Emergency rooms and hospitals continue to be safe to treat patients with needs other than COVID-19 with extra safety precautions in place. https://bit.ly/2YVxaqL

$25 telemedicine screening. We can help you decide if you need to seek medical care. Be seen virtually by a Emergency Medicine Physician. https://www.gsepem.com/telemedicine/ now available from 8 am- 430 pm

Trying to decide whether you need to go in somewhere for treatment? In this challenging time, Greater San Antonio Emergency Physicians is proud to offer telemedicine visits to Bexar County residents concerned about symptoms or exposure to the coronavirus. We believe that by utilizing telemedicine we can reduce potential exposures to those who are most likely to become impacted by this virus. If you are unable to receive guidance from your personal physician we are here to serve you.

We can help answer questions from those who have traveled from geographic areas with widespread community transmission, or those who have had close contact with confirmed cases of COVD-19 within the last 14 days.

If you are ill and have reason to believe you have contracted COVID-19 the CDC recommends the following:

Stay home except to get medical care. People who are mildly ill with COVID-19 are able to recover at home. Do not leave, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas. Be sure to get care if you feel worse or you think it is an emergency.

We can help you decide if you need to seek medical care or get tested as testing becomes available. Of course, if your symptoms are severe enough you may be directed to your nearest Emergency Department.

For a small fee to help alleviate the costs of quarantined physicians, we are currently available to evaluate you via video chat from (8 am-430 pm). Fill out the form on our website for further information.
