IT’S JUST REC… or is it? For years, “It’s just rec” has been used to imply that recreational sports are less than — not competitive enough, not serious enough, not good enough.
But the truth is this: Recreational programs are the backbone of youth sports!
They’re where kids first learn to love the game.
Where they make new friends.
Where they build confidence & develop real fundamental skills.
Where every child — not just the elite — gets a chance to play.
Over the last decade, kids have been pushed to “play up,” specialize early, join travel teams, or jump into high-cost competitive clubs. And it’s not working. 25 years ago, 8 out of 10 kids played a team sport every year. Today, it’s fewer than 5 out of 10. If the current system were working, more kids would be playing… not fewer. The IT’S JUST REC campaign is our effort to break that stereotype and bring kids back to sports — where it should start: in safe, fun, local, affordable community programs.
Together, Parks & Recreation departments and the National Academy of Athletics can rebuild a model that is accessible, inclusive, and designed for kids to play hard & have fun again.
Because it’s not “just rec”… It’s the foundation of youth sports.
