A gentle reminder that you don't need to "earn" your food/calories. If you are alive and breathing, congratulations! You have earned your right to nourish yourself.

This time of year is when diet culture comes out in full force. You do not need to put yourself on a diet or feel pressured to change in any way that you don't want to.

Happy new year! I hope you are all safe, healthy, and comfortable.

Hello friends. I figure it's been a while since I did a (re)introduction, so here we go:

My name is Marina, and I am a licensed and registered dietitian nutritionist based in San Antonio, Texas. I have earned both a bachelor's and a masters degree in nutrition. My specialty is in eating disorders, and I plan to begin working on my CEDRD certification soon.

I have also been an aerial student at Aerial Horizon since fall of 2013. I have enjoyed developing (and redeveloping) my skills and strength over the years.

So why Cirque Nutrition? Well, it made sense for a dietitian who does circus things to dole out sound nutrition advice.

But what do eating disorders have to do with circus and nutrition? Unfortunately, probably more than most people think. In many people's endeavors to fit a certain body type, get fit, or lose weight to be a lighter flyer, I have seen many disordered eating patterns ignite.

So what do I do? I provide nutrition advice that will feed your circus body. I pose important questions that make you think about your own eating patterns. I re-share posts that I find relevant. I challenge the diet mentality, and sometimes that means I post unpopular things. No fad diets here.

My aim with this account is to provide nutrition information as it pertains to circus and aerial artists, performers, students, and hobbyists, and also encourage questions and friendly discussion. The nutrition world is ever evolving and discussion is warranted.

It is also important to remember that what works for one person may not work for another. If you want nutrition information specific to you, please contact me and we can either set something up or I can point you in the direction of someone who can help you.

Happy training!

This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week. For those of you who don't know, I primarily work with individuals who have eating disorders. This is something that is very close to my heart, and I am passionate about this population.-
-
Eating disorders can affect anyone. All ages, sizes, races, ethnicities, genders, sexes, sexualities, economic status, occupation...anyone. There is a strong genetic link (eating disorders often run in families). As some say, genetics load the weapon and environment fires it.-
-
Eating disorders are treatable. The sooner they are identified, and the sooner treatment begins, the higher the likelihood of full recovery. The longer the eating disorder persists, the more difficult recovery becomes. However, it is still very possible.-
-
The thing to keep in mind is that recovery from an eating disorder is long term, and there are different types of treatment (in-patient, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, out patient individual therapy/counseling with therapist, dietitian, psychiatrist, doctor, etc). It can take years to *fully* recover, however there are certainly places of peace and recovery that occur throughout the process. It is worth every second of hard work.-
-
What does this have to do with circus? Like I said: Eating disorders, and more often, disordered eating, can affect anyone. Since starting circus classes, I've met several people with disordered eating patterns. In the same respect, I've seen past clients thrive in the circus community.-
-
At the end of the day, I just want to bring awareness to a very real issue that is close to my heart. Whether you were aware or not, you've probably known someone with an eating disorder.-
-
Please be kind to those around you and yourself. And never lose hope âĪ

How to eat when travelling? Well this is certainly a toughy unless you are super disciplined, go grocery shopping often, and don't want to explore traditional food in many countries. Just kidding! It's not impossible.-
🍜 First off: share meals and appetizers! If you are travelling with someone else, this is easy. If not, make new friends! You get to try a variety of foods without over stuffing yourself or wasting food.-
🍉 Next: Have fruit with breakfast and as snacks! Everywhere has markets, small grocery stores, and places to get fruit.-
ðŸĨĶ Get your veggies in where you can. I know a lot of traditional food in a lot of countries don't always include veggies, so you may need to go out of your way occasionally, but make it happen. Again, markets exist pretty much everywhere.-
💊 Lastly, yes you may be on vacation, but don't just lounge around all day. You need to move your body! You may not be doing all of the fun circus training you usually do, but find ways to move! You are in a new place so go exploring or at least find a playground to have fun on!-
🌍 Now I'm going to go back to enjoying the Czech Republic! I just needed to rest my feet a bit 😊 @ Prague, Czech Republic

Pro-tip: Don't wait until you are absolutely starving to eat something. You will be more likely to eat too fast, over-eat, and more than likely feel uncomfortably full afterwards. If this happens, digestion can take longer which can make inversions, climbing, contortion, dancing, and moving (in general) uncomfortable and more difficult.-
🕓 Instead, try to eat something every 2-4 hours. Don't go longer than 4 hours without feeding yourself. Aside from what was stated above, you need to fuel your circus body! Give it what it needs to do the tricks that you need it to do! It will appreciate being fueled in regular intervals and will likely perform better for you because you will literally have more energy to burn. Not to mention you won't have any tummy growling or headaches to contend with, so you can focus better.-
🍜 And if you do eat the whole burrito (the way I did here), don't beat yourself up over it. Maybe you needed that amount of food at that time. Training hard and/or performing frequently means you will need more food to fuel your body.-
ðŸ― Now go on with your awesome self and enjoy some yummy food this week!
