This would be good news if Medicare covered more home and birth centers births to allow for better patient autonomy but that is not the case. As hospitals close their maternity units or even close down altogether, we leave growing families at risk to lacking access to prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum care. The maternity care deserts grow and our county wonders why maternal mortality and morbidity rates are on the rise.

This decline in hospital-based obstetric care is revealed in a new study in Health Affairs, which shares that rural communities have been the hardest hit, with large portions of this population losing access to labor and delivery care.
This trend will likely continueāor worsenāfollowing the federal governmentās recent cuts to Medicaid. Access to care is a primary determinant of outcomes and is key to ensuring maternal health and survival.
