San Diego used to have only 3 IBCLC private practices in-network with Aetna and 1 in-network with United Healthcare! I’m happy to now be the 4th IBCLC private practice in- network with Aetna and the 2nd with United Healthcare. Families local to San Diego can have IBCLC help without leaving home πŸ’›

An aspect of Birth to Breast I find so beautiful is the majority of families I support are referred to me by doulas, midwives, physical therapists, and chiropractors. Not only am I honored to be trusted by these other amazing providers, but this is also a sign that these families have a support circle which is so rare nowadays!

So many parents feel the drop in support that happens after the baby has arrived. A four-week gap in check-ins while pregnant can feel like a flash, but when you are postpartum, a four-week gap is like months.

Families finding through other providers is a sign that these families have someone to lean on, listen to them, & most importantly believe them.

This is huge!

Thanksgiving is a day of gratitude and mixed feelings. I am grateful for Thanksgiving being a time for my family to get together; at the same time, It has a foundation of injustice that breaks my heart. The same rings true for the birth and postpartum world America is in. So today, I want to acknowledge what I'm grateful for without erasing the difficult foundations.

πŸ’›As an IBCLC, while I’m grateful to support families in feeding their babies, I am heartbroken by the social systems that stole the power & physiology of birth and feeding from generations of people to the point that IBCLC had to become a professional.

While the foundation is broken, I trust change-makers in every role, and I know each year, there will be more to be grateful for!

Did you know California signed a family leave bill, SB 951? Starting in 2025, families who make less than 57,000 a year will receive up to 90% of their income while on family leave. This was one of the many accomplishments celebrated at the Liquid Gold Gala. Thank you, for inviting us to a fun night of talking lactation, parenting, and oral function πŸ’›

Language manners. Did you know power pumping and cluster feeding are the same (just different ways of feeding milk)? Cluster feeding and growth spurts are frequent feeding times, but the language around them does not communicate this or doesn't communicate the intensity. Before parents start googling these terms, they usually think it means a time of growth and eating a little closer together. But since the intensity isn't communicated, they feel something may be wrong. Power pumping, on the other hand, is a great term that communicates the purpose and intensity. Parents expect to be pumping often, & expect a powerful impact on their production. Knowing the why, whether something is normal, knowing it's temporary, helps make difficult times more manageable

Feeding babies has been especially hard since covid. In 2020 support groups shut down, and IBCLCs mastered virtual care. In 2021 IBCLCs tried to find the balance between support and safety, and support groups reopened. Now it's 2022, and we are facing a formula shortage. I created Feed Your Baby San Diego to be a resource page for families and birth workers. You can save this image or the link in my bio.

My brochures are printed! Inside, parents will find information on their baby’s feeding reflexes and how to activate them for easier latching. Some babies don't pick up latching right away or have a shallow latch, so I also included info on troubleshooting latch, expressing milk, & when to call an IBCLC. Now I just need to give these to our amazing providers so families can learn about this before their first latch β™₯️

Both babies and adults are supposed to keep their mouth/lips sealed with their tongue on the roof of their mouth at all times except when:

1. Talking (or playing with their mouth for babies)
2. Chewing food
3. The end of swallowing

If your baby is nursing or bottle feeding and keeps their mouth seeing an IBCLC is a great place to start. They can assess your babies oral function and may reccomend you to see:

1. A Bodyworker (cranial-sacral therapist, chiropractor, or DO)
2. An Occupational Therapist
3. A Tethered Oral Tissue release provider
4. Airway Dentist when they are older

If your kiddo is older than a year or if your the one with your mouth open you may want to see:

1. A Myofunctional therapist (Usually older than 2)
2. A Airway dentist
3. A Bodyworker

Burnout! I've been reading the book burnout by Amelia and Emily Nagoski and a main portion of the book is how to deal with the stress our body needs to process. The idea is since most stressors we meet in modern life are more nuanced than a look, we often don't get to complete the stress cycle. Here are four ways to let your body complete the stress cycle so it can leave the hyper-alert stress zone. These methods also help you prioritize rest, recovery, and bonding. One more message I want families to take home is that it's ok to cry, you don't need to be perfect or rational every second of the day, and you can both be joyful and sad about different aspects of life.

In the postpartum haze it can be easy to forget to eat. Having high fiber foods with 3 grams or more of fiber near by along with water can lessen hangry-ness and help your bathroom visits be more smooth when you have the extra long postpartum bathroom routine (peribottle, pads, and witch hazel) . Your partner, parent, doula, or even older child can be in charge of maintaining your postpartum recovery basket. Don’t forget making milk is a stage of your life when you require the most carbohydrates, so follow your body's hunger and satiety cues just like you follow your baby's.

Figuring out when to see a lactation consultant can be as fuzzy as deciphering early labor signs. Here are four times you will want to see a lactation consultant for a private consultation sooner rather than later. A private lactation consultation should be with an international board-certified lactation consultant, be 90 minutes, including a weighted feed, infant suck function evaluation, and discussing the current situation, goals, and of course help with latch and position. Consultations can also help you figure out a pumping plan, your fl**ge size, and baby-led bottle feeding.

Insurance coverage for lactation consultations is a game-changer. Here are four insurances that typically cover six outpatient lactation consultations. Six consults may seem like a lot but can be helpful even when feeding is going smoothly.
Now how can you use these consults to build a strong foundation?

*Prenatal consult: This gives you a chance to ask an IBCLC all your questions. You can discuss latch, what’s normal, and create a plan for postpartum.

*First week home consult: This consult gives you a chance to address any latch difficulties, check on weight gain/milk production, and customize your postpartum plan to your baby now that you know more about their birth journey.

* 4-6 six-week consult to discuss paced bottle feeding, protecting production with bottles, pump fl**ge sizing, and upcoming changes in your baby. (Ex: breast/chest tissue may feel soft more often now, and this is normal)

* 10-12 week consult to discuss distracted feeding, protecting production with longer stretches of sleep, and or going back to work

*4-6 month consult to discuss the future start of solids, how to handle/prevent biting, and changes in weight gain/ nursing technique (AKA gymnurstics)

*Gentle weaning consult and discussion on how nursing changes into toddlerhood
