Many of you know or have heard me talk highly (and ad nauseam) about North Star’s first employee, Jessi. Jessi , who now lives in Portland, is an incredible SLP and AAC specialist. Recently, they have been having health issues that have prevented them from working. One of their recent coworkers created a go fund me to help with expenses while Jessi seeks medical treatment. If you’re able to make any size donation or share this post to support Jessi, we would be grateful. Jessi is so deserving of support and care from our community.

We are raising funds to help support our friend Jessi. Jessi is an amazing speech thera… Stacia Torborg needs your support for Help Jessi Through A Tough Time

Did you know the California governor’s proposed budget includes a diversion of $1 billion from developmental services? This money was in part intended to support a rate increase for providers, which would increase access to services for disabled individuals across the state. Join North Star tomorrow for a rally to encourage a budget revision that includes the funding that was promised to support Californians with disabilities! Dr. Katherine, Chris, and our newest SLP Dina will be there and we’d love to see you!

Do you believe that access to services is important for people with disabilities? The governor's proposed budget includes over $1 billion in cuts to funding for disabled Californians, including many of the individuals North Star serves. It takes less than 30 seconds to click this link to send a letter to our California legislators to let them know that cutting funding for disabled individuals is not okay with their constituents.

Bring kids together! Support the inclusion of neurodivergent and neurotypical children. Allow children with speech-language disorders to meet and play with other kids who communicate like them. Build a community of parents who can support each other. The play group will be relatively unstructured and child-led, with an opportunity for children to explore North Star's toys and activities on their own terms. Parents will be expected to stay with their child for the entire play group to keep their child and the environment safe and to help their child clean up after playing. A North Star speech-language therapist will facilitate the group by supporting play and communication with the children and by answering questions the parents may have. WHO'S INVITED? Maximum 6 children per session
There are no prerequisites for participation. Children do not need to have a communication disorder, use verbal language, follow directions in a group, be ambulatory, etc. to participate. All are welcome! DETAILS Dates: Mondays 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, and 1/29 Cost: $140 for all 4 sessions, or $40 per session (minimum 2 sessions) — must sign up in advance, pre-payment is collected for all sessions on 1/8.

Family-centered speech-language therapy

At North Star, we believe that speech-language therapy should be family-centered and include decision making based on science. That means actively include parents and caregivers in treatment using research-supported techniques like parent coaching. We know that parents are the experts in their children and research suggests that children make faster progress when parents are involved in their therapy. The science behind what we do is serious, but luckily children learn best when they’re playing and having fun, which is why we focus on guiding you in the best ways to play with your child that results in improved communication skills.
