We talk about the affects of hormonal birth control on receptors in our brain, our attraction to partners, and the emotional response our bodies can have from synthetic hormones.​​​​​​​​

Many times I've been frustrated when my husband says "you're period must be coming soon" or a family member points out that I am having "gluten rage" in a heated moment. It can feel discouraging and that I'm being unheard. However, I know that there are also direct causes for some of my emotions that relate to my physical body.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
There was a time in my life when I had no idea why I was so angry or frustrated. I felt very misunderstood and shut down in relationships because I often was angry or felt irritated with people. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
While I'm certainly far from perfect, I now know what can contribute to me feeling "on edge" or "moody" more often than others. ​​​​​​​​

Synthetic hormones often mimick our natural hormones, but it is often to have an effect that isn't naturally happening in our body.

For insulin, we might not make enough naturally, so we inject it to balance a delicate system.

I felt like I wasn't myself...

It took time to connect the dots because on top of starting a medication in the form of hormonal birth control, I was doing a lot of other 💩

1. I was building a with my fiance at the time (Now husband)

2. I was planning a wedding in a financially lean way

3. It was my first year of marriage

4. My husband had a major accident and we spent over 2 weeks in the hospital only after 1 month of marriage

All of this stress added to my own confusion about my short temper, weight gain, and my inability to manage my stress regardless of the efforts I put in.

It took more time and the stress to fade for me to figure out that it wasn't just me causing me to feel bloated and heavier every passing month...

or turn into "The Hulk" at every tiny little thing that wasn't expected or planned for...

or see in the span of a year my pant size go from a 5 to a 12!

This 👏 Isn't 👏 Normal 👏

Women who had started birth control before me I'd also watched go through similar experiences and I was told... "oh, that's the "happy tax" you pay when you get married" about their weight gain.

This isn't normal, and our bodies aren't built to deal with synthetic hormones, and all of these are signs of that.

Why are periods and birth control taboo? 🤔

I've never quite understood why as young women it seemed as though our period could only be talked about in the "secret club" called the bathroom.

🤫

So many of my friends had a lot of pain, mishaps, and scares... but we were only talking about it with the girls who were also 12 or 13. This didn't do much good because we didn't have years of experience being a woman.

🤷‍♀️

Now it's my turn to look back and help the women who are making a decision about their fertility.

I want to break the stigma this topic can have, and I'll be doing that by sharing my own experience with hormonal birth control.

Our Feminine Fall

We as women naturally begin to retreat inwards, need more recovery after physical demands and have a lower social bandwidth.

Perfect time to enjoy your home, family, and REST!

Just like a tree prepares for its winter hibernation by shedding its leaves and sending sap into its roots, women can lean into this natural rhythm by storing mental and emotional energy!

Then, during our "Spring" we will have ample energy to burst into projects, spending time connecting with our friends, coworkers, and meeting new people.

But... at this time, we may want to pay more attention to our energy needs, rest when we're tired, spend time refreshing our home, organizing, and taking a bit more time for self care.

For me, this means:

🌱 Taking the time to walk my garden...

☕ Enjoy my coffee a little longer in the morning...

🫖 Having an evening cup of herbal tea...

💤 Setting a night where there is not work, project, or task weighing over me...

We might not be as aware of our next phase of our hormonal rhythm, but it can be one of the most important. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Issues later in our cycle can occur such as:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Anovulation (Not ovulating)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Anxiety⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Miscarriage⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For those of us who aren't actively trying to get pregnant... what does it matter if we develop an egg or not?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We've talked about what detoxification really looks like and how we can encourage it... Now what?
