Reducing salt intake to less than 2,300 milligrams per day, and ideally to 1,500 milligrams, can have a substantial impact on lowering blood pressure.

What Medications are Available for Cholesterol Management?

Medications for cholesterol management are designed to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, raise HDL (good) cholesterol, and reduce triglycerides. Statins, such as atorvastatin, simvastatin, and rosuvastatin, are the most commonly prescribed medications. They work by inhibiting an enzyme involved in cholesterol production in the liver, effectively lowering LDL cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Other medications include bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine, colesevelam), which bind to bile acids in the intestines and prevent their reabsorption, prompting the liver to use more cholesterol to produce bile. Ezetimibe works by reducing the absorption of cholesterol from the diet. For individuals with very high cholesterol levels or those who cannot tolerate statins, PCSK9 inhibitors (alirocumab, evolocumab) are injectable medications that significantly lower LDL cholesterol. Fibrates and niacin are also used to lower triglycerides and raise HDL cholesterol. A healthcare provider can determine the most appropriate medication based on individual health needs and risk factors.
