I know that it’s frustrating trying to give your teen advice, only to have it rejected outright 🙅♀️
Advice lands differently with ADHD teens who crave independence and want to feel like they have control over their own lives.
Instead of giving advice outright, try this tip the next time you want to support your ADHD teen but don’t know the best way how.

If you feel like you’re constantly telling your ADHD child NO…
You may need some help in shifting the way you give them instructions.
The next time you want to tell them stop (as long as it’s not something that is a safety concern), focus on telling them what to do instead.
If you want to know what to do after phrasing your instructions this way, comment below and I’ll share some strategies!

Your teen might feel swamped, frustrated, or like they’re constantly letting people down—even if they don’t say it aloud.
This disconnect between how ADHD looks and how it feels can make it even harder for teens to ask for help.
They may not even know how to explain what’s going on inside their minds or fear being judged for it. 😔
If you’re seeing the outward signs of ADHD, it’s important to remember that they don’t tell the full story.
Your teen might be working so hard just to hold it together.

How many times has this happened though? 🤣
For a lot of parents of ADHD kids, they learn about their own ADHD through their child’s diagnosis.
And it makes sense because ADHD runs in families.
According to research, around 40% of kids with ADHD also have a parent with ADHD.
It could be even more based on parents who aren’t diagnosed.
If you are a parent of an ADHD child and there is also an ADHD parent in your family (whether it’s you or not), I’m here to support you with resources and tips that can help your family thrive ❤️

Conversations about responsibilities with your tween or teen can often feel like a battlefield ⚔️
Tasks that seem simple to you may feel like climbing mountains for ADHD kids.
That’s why changing how you communicate about responsibilities can make such a big difference.
Here’s one quick tip on what you can do to help your ADHD teen get started on tasks:
💡 Shift your instructions from telling them what not to do, to telling them what TO DO.
Instead of saying, “Stop being on your phone so much”
Think about something you want them to do in the moment.

I know how hard it feels when your teen insists they don’t need support.
🎥 Watch this for tips on how you can best support your ADHD teen.
Teens with ADHD often crave independence, and at the same time may struggle with completing the things they need to do.
This makes it hard to know how you can give them support when they say they don’t need it.
One tip is to start by identifying ways that you can give them small pieces of independence (such as going to the grocery store or helping with a recipe).
When you give them opportunities for independence that they are likely to be successful in, this builds their confidence and drive to be independent in other ways.
If you are looking for more practical strategies to support your tween or teen with ADHD, I have a FREE guide that might be of help!

Let’s clear up some confusion around rejection sensitivity...
Rejection sensitivity is a trait that can make someone feel extra sensitive to real or perceived rejection.
That means that even small signs of rejection (e.g. taking a while to respond to a text) can feel devastating.
While it isn’t a mental health diagnosis or disorder, there are some research studies finding that kids with ADHD experience higher levels of rejection sensitivity.
Rejection sensitivity isn’t only found in individuals with ADHD and is also common in social anxiety.
It is important to be aware of and to understand if your child’s sensitivity to rejection is related to their ADHD symptoms or potentially underlying anxiety.

But I’m not a normal person 🤷♀️
Here’s the thing with ADHD. A lot of things that may look like “laziness” are actually a result of executive functioning skills.
Being late ➡️ Time management
Not doing work ➡️ Task initiation
Forgetting things ➡️ Planning and organization
Being able to understand that ADHD is related to executive functioning is so important for understanding your ADHD child.
What questions do you have about executive functioning?

Parents, I hear you—validation is an important tool to use.
It shows your child that their feelings are important and real, even if you don’t agree with the reason why behind their strong emotion.
However, if it’s your only tool, it likely won’t be enough for emotion regulation, and could actually be making their emotions worse.
Here are two ways in which validation can be worsening your ADHD child’s emotions.
1️⃣ If you are using validation in place of setting a limit and not also upholding a boundary or limit, it could be confusing for your ADHD child.
For example, if you are only validating their emotions when they hit, and don’t also utilize a consequence you have previously set up, that may be confusing.
2️⃣ For some kids, it could make their emotions worse if you are only using validation over and over again.
It can feel like they are getting stuck and they may need to be redirected.
As a reminder, every ADHD child is unique, and what works for one child may not work for others.
Supporting emotional regulation is about providing a range of tools to help your child navigate big emotions 🌱

Executive functioning skills are a big reason behind this.
Getting ready in the morning includes planning, organization, and time management.
These are all important for meeting goals and tasks.
But for ADHD kids, these take longer to develop than other kids.
