When baby Stevie was born prematurely with serious health challenges, she spent four months in the NICU at UC San Diego Health. With the support of our dedicated care team and the Wee Nuzzle program, which helps parents and NICU babies bond through early breastfeeding support, Stevie and her mom, Lauren Kennington, found strength, hope and healing together.

“The benefits of human milk are incredibly important for infants in the NICU, especially those born before 28 weeks gestation, because the intestinal barrier in a preterm baby is very sensitive and immature,” said Sandra Leibel, MD, neonatologist at UC San Diego Health. “Breast milk can also help boost a baby’s immune system and provides unique nutrition to help with their overall healing and growth.”

Hope is on the horizon for people living with fatty liver disease.

UC San Diego researchers have developed the first drug shown to actually reverse liver damage in MASH, a serious form of fatty liver disease. In clinical trials, many patients saw healthier liver tissue and fewer complications, without major side effects.

"This is the first drug of its kind to show real biological impact in MASH," said Rohit Loomba, MD, principal investigator of the study and gastroenterologist and hepatologist at UC San Diego Health. "If these findings are confirmed in Phase III trials, we may finally be able to offer patients a targeted therapy that halts and potentially reverses liver damage before it progresses to life-threatening stages."

Rosa Tellez-Moore was diagnosed with a metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with Stage 3 fibrosis, an advanced form of liver disease caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver that triggers inflammation and scarring.

At the time of her diagnosis with MASH, there were no Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatments so she decided to pursue clinical trials and make lifestyle changes.

After a year-long clinical trial at UC San Diego Health, her liver fat dropped to normal, her fibrosis regressed and she no longer had MASH. She didn’t just fight for herself, she’s helping pave the way for treatments that could change lives.

"I was so overcome with how fortunate I was to be part of this trial and to have this second chance at life," Tellez-Moore said. "I decided to enroll in the clinical trial initially because I realized that if I said no, I’d never know what the outcome could have been. I am so grateful."

After diagnosis with liver disease, patient Rosa Tellez-Moore opts to participate in clinical trials, which change the trajectory of her treatment.
