At the very top of your spine sit two tiny bones: the atlas (C1) and axis (C2). These upper cervical vertebrae surround and protect the brainstem—your body’s control center for autonomic functions like sleep, digestion, circulation, and energy balance.
When these bones become even slightly misaligned (due to posture, injury, stress, or poor ergonomics), they can compress or irritate the brainstem and surrounding nerves.
This subtle interference can cause a cascade of dysfunction throughout the body, including:
