David Connolly, CAMFTs Federal Lobbyist in Washington, presented The Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition’s Outstanding Legislator Award to Rep. Mike Thompson of Santa Rosa.
Rep. Thompson was the lead sponsor in the House of Representatives of the legislation that will allow MFTs to become Medicare Part B providers starting on January 1, 2024.

If you're an MFT moving out of state, there are a few things you have to keep in mind.
First, license portability! Each state has different requirements. What kind of fees, authorizations, verifications, exams, or background checks are needed?
You'll also need to determine if the California Clinical Exam will be accepted in that state. Some states will accept it, others will also need test scores, and still others will require you to take another exam.
There's a LOT to know when practicing in a different state. Luckily, we created a License Portability Chart and California Clinical Exam Equivalency Chart to help make this confusing process a little bit easier. They also include board contact info, state legal and ethical rules, and a link to the application for each state. MFTs, bookmark this page now if you're considering an out-of-state move!

If you've already decided you're opting out of Medicare, good news! You no longer need to wait until January 1 to submit the paperwork.
Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) are accepting opt-out affidavits as of NOW. Some important things to remember:
👉The forms must be physically mailed (not emailed) to the appropriate MAC.
👉Each MAC has its own opt-out affidavit form.
👉If you're rendering services in two different jurisdictions (for example, if you're providing therapy in both California and Florida), you'll need to complete the process with BOTH MACs,
👉California's MAC is Noridian. If you're also working in other states, check out the Medicare Corner's Interactive MAC map to determine which forms you'll need to mail in.

Hey, licensed MFTs! As of January 1, YOU will be eligible to become Medicare providers! Are you ready for what that means?
Whether you're planning on taking on Medicare clients or not, there are things you need to know about filling out the right paperwork and setting yourself up for success.
Here are a few things you should keep in mind:
👉 If you're interested in enrolling, you can do that NOW! If you want to opt out, you need to wait until January 1 to submit your opt-out paperwork.
👉 You're either all in, or all out. You cannot be opted out for some services/locations, but not others.
👉 If you're opting out, make sure all your Medicare patients sign private contracts. You can find a template for the private contract on your MAC's website (and if you're only working from California, your MAC is Noridian).
