What, like I would ignore national donut day?

Today could be a chance to honor your hunger cues, or conquer your fears, or just business as usual. But national donut day as “silly” as it may seem is a great opportunity to appreciate and celebrate a healthy relationship with food!

May is mental health awareness month! The past two years have highlighted the importance of caring for our mental health. Even before the pandemic, many of us had been struggling with mental health concerns; in fact more than 50% of people in the US will be diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis at some point in their lifetime (source: CDC). Even more astounding, 1 in 5 Americans will experience mental illness in a given year, and 1 in 5 children will, at some point in their lives, suffer from a mental illness that significantly impacts their livelihoods (source: CDC webpage)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let’s continue to normalize the discussion around mental health. Talk to your friends and loved ones about it, try therapy out, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You deserve to have a healthy mind!

Happy earth day! 🌎 🌱 🌳

Our planet is such a precious resource for our mental health. There is evidence to suggest spending time outdoors is correlated with decreased depression, reduced stress, and overall improvement in mental health. It’s so important for our health that we work to preserve this wonderful commodity. Here are some ways to enjoy the outdoors and encourage protecting the environment!

1. Mindful walk outside observing with your senses; observe the breeze and feeling of sunlight, smells of nature and beautiful sights

2. Spend time outdoors with your loved ones at a picnic, or on a hike. Introduce your children to nature, play outside!

3. Invest in saving the environment by picking up trash, buying sustainable products, or donating to environmental organizations. This will make you feel accomplished and can be a mood booster.

Sometimes I practice self care by wearing comfy clothes, listening to some good tunes, and planning future events all while this mush of a golden retriever keeps me company and helps me soothe.

It’s women’s history month, so let’s explore women’s mental health. According to the American Psychiatric Association, women are far more likely than men to experience the following risk factors for mental health disorders:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Lower pay: Women who are full time workers earn about one-fourth less than male counterparts in a given year.1
• Poverty: 14.2% of women aged 18 to 64 fall in the ‘poverty’ range while only 10.5% of men in this age bracket are considered to be in this range
• Victims of violence: About 1 in 3 women
have experienced sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime
• Being a caregiver: 65% of caregivers are women. Female and may spend as much as 50% more time providing care than male caregiver
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let’s keep advocating for women’s rights and reduce risk factors for mental health conditions.

Reminder that we need to stop invalidating others experiences and be willing to listen. Therapy is always an option to help overcome whatever you’re feeling that isn’t serving you; to get through it, not over it.

You may have noticed that children have been even more stressed lately; with the stress of distance learning or alterations to their social environments at school as well as being exposed to the stress of the adults in their lives. Kids are sponges, which is a blessing and a curse as they can really feel the emotions that aren’t expressed around them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s important to talk to our kids open and honestly about the current events in our country and the world, now more than ever. It’s important for them to have space to talk and have an outlet for their emotions and learn tools to be able to express emotions so that they don’t get suppressed, in “language” that is understandable to them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
GAMES!!!! these offer a language and vehicle for kids to learn to be in touch with themselves band therefore their emotions! And who doesn’t like M&Ms? Best of both worlds!

Today, 9.11.20, marks 19 years since the day that changed our country, and the world forever. As a native New Yorker living on the other side of the country, I do a lot to remind myself of my roots, such as pictures to remind me of my beloved city. So many people lost their lives, and this event impacted the mental health and well-being of survivors. Today, I light candles to honor my first hometown (queens New York), and my forever hometown (Long Island ) in memory of those who sacrificed all, those who struggled and continue to struggle with mental health, and those who may have lost their battle with mental health.

Remember , today is a day to be kind and do a good deed, or 11!

911day.org has several ways to engage in a good deed, including taking action to reach out to your local representative in support of the 988 hotline! For those of you who are unfamiliar, the 988 hotline would be the 3 digit national su***de prevention hotline that would positively impact individuals in crisis.
