June is Pride Month, and we're so happy to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community here in San Diego and Imperial Valley! 🏳️‍🌈
Many individuals in the disability community also identify as LGBTQ+. Navigating both communities while advocating for acceptance and accessibility takes strength and resilience.

Everyone deserves to be seen, valued, and included for who they are. This month, we celebrate the diversity and voices that make our communities stronger.

Happy Pride Month!

Our team and board members boogied for disability rights at DisCo at the Capitol: California Disability Community Advocacy Conference! 🎶 Each year in Sacramento, DisCo at the Capitol is held to inspire, educate, and empower people to advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities across California.

Our board members and self-advocates, Cali Williams and Taylor Wiesner, alongside our Associate Executive Director, Kate Kinnamont, and Executive Director, Mark Klaus attended in support of inclusion and access for all. We're proud to stand beside so many incredible self-advocates, organizations, and leaders working to create positive change.

Growth happens one step at a time, and Cesar’s journey through SDRC’s Paid Internship Program is a reminder of what’s possible with the right support. When Cesar first began his internship at , he expressed his struggles adjusting to his position. Since then, with a lot of hours spent prepping meals, serving customers, support from his fellow kitchen staff, he shared that he's learned to anchor himself in the moment and maintain a sense of calm in the often hectic environment of the kitchen.

With support from our Paid Internship Program (PIP) in partnership with , Cesar had the opportunity to strengthen his skills, gain hands-on experience, and build his resume. After completing his second internship, he was hired by TERI as a Banquet Houseperson.

“I feel seen and heard.”

That sense of belonging and opportunity is at the heart of SDRC’s Paid Internship Program and the services we provide every day. Our goal is to help the individuals we serve build confidence, find meaningful employment, and experience inclusion and acceptance in their communities.

Cesar hopes to continue growing his culinary skills and one day open a restaurant of his own.
