It's Small Business Saturday! 🛍️

Small Business Saturday is a day to encourage shoppers to support local small businesses this holiday sesaon. Many of the individuals we serve are makers, bakers, and creators who have their own microenterprises selling their art and goods. We've highlighted a few on our pages over the years, and often invite these creators to our Resource Fairs and Craft Fairs. We want to invite you to tag a few of our your favorite microenterprises and small businesses owned by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the comments section below.

We encourage you to shop small this weekend and throughout the year: holidays, birthdays, and just because! Don't forget to stop by our SDRC Annual Holiday Craft Fair in Kearny Mesa and El Centro this month! More details on our page.

Happy shopping!

On the day after Thanksgiving, we celebrate National Native American Heritage Day. Today is part of a broader celebration of Native American Heritage Month (NAHM).

There are more than 575 federally recognized tribes in the United States, 110 of these located in California and 18 in San Diego County. Native Nations have lived in relationship with this land, sustaining vibrant communities grounded in respect, reciprocity, and care.

An educator of the Barona Cultural Center & Museum recently provided a training for SDRC staff to learn the history and culture of the Kumeyaay people, the indigenous people of the San Diego County, Imperial County, and Baja California. With replicas of native tools and artwork, our teams were able to get a peek into what types of food and clothing were (and some that still are) used and the traditions the Kumeyaay people practiced.

NAHM is a time to celebrate and honor the flourishing cultures, traditions, and history of Native American/American Indian and Alaska Natives, and an opportunity to learn about unique challenges tribal communities face and better understand how historical trauma has impacted Native peoples. This year’s theme is the “Promise of the Next Generation.” It calls us to look forward to all Native youth and students who carry the hopes, dreams, and teachings of their ancestors into the future.

This month, our teams dressed in purple in recognition of National Epilepsy Awareness Month! 💜

But why purple for epilepsy awareness? Cassidy Megan, a woman with epilepsy, is credited to establishing the association or purple with epilepsy. “Purple can represent every unique person, experience, and perspective of the epilepsy community,"" Cassidy shared.

You can learn more about National Epilepsy Awareness Month—and the purple movement Cassidy helped start—at epilepsy.com.

Whether you also wore purple, talked about epilepsy with someone new, or donated to an epilepsy organization, you supported the epilepsy community! With 9% of the individuals we serve are diagnosed with epilepsy, we appreciate every effort that helps create a more informed and supportive community in San Diego and Imperial counties and beyond.

Recently, the Regional Center’s Cultural Specialists hosted their very first in-person statewide meeting at SDRC with the support of the ARCA - Association of Regional Center Agencies.

There were 17 Regional Centers represented along with representatives from California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) that oversee Language Access & Cultural Competency and Service Access and Equity programs. Attendees discussed how they are collaborating with local community-based organizations, how they are using funds to promote access to our services, and barriers faced when trying to implement projects under these initiatives. The group looks forward to continuing to meet in-person annually to brainstorm together, share what’s working and not working in each of our catchment areas and better collaborate across the state to leverage our existing resources.
