What Kind of Breast Pump Do You Need?

⭐️Little known fact⭐️
The type of breast pump you need is dependent on where you are in your breastfeeding journey.

Most of you will look at this post and start thinking ok which Medela or Spectra pump should I get through my insurance?

That’s actually not the question that needs to be asked. A better question is where am I in my breastfeeding journey and why am I pumping?

Here are some reasons women pump:
1. Extra breast stimulation
2. To relieve engorgement
3. To store

⭐️Extra Breast Stimulation = Hospital Grade Pump (Medela SYMPHONY)
- If you are pumping in place of breastfeeding
- If you are pumping because your baby is being supplemented
- If you are pumping because your baby is having a hard time latching/feeding/or transferring milk effectively
AND your baby is less than 4 weeks old, you need to use a hospital grade pump (NOT the insurance pump or a pump you buy at Target)

⭐️To Relieve Engorgement=silicone hand pump, regular hand pump, insurance pump, or store bought pump
- If your breasts have just filled and get uncomfortably full between feedings
- If baby only fed on one side and your other breast feels like it’s going to explode
- If you missed a feed for whatever reason
You do need to pump and you can use any of the pumps listed above. HOWEVER, if you are pumping for the first 2 reasons listed above, pump to comfort only.

⭐️To Store Milk = any insurance or store bought pump
- Think about your needs once it’s time to store (strong suction, mobility, ease of use, etc)
- Research the pumps available to you
- Ask friends about their experience but know that you may have a totally different experience with the same pump
I do not recommend routine pumping for storage purposes until you are out of the engorgement stage (right about week 3 postpartum). Once you’ve hit about week 3, routine pumping (ie. 3-7x/week depending on your goals) is perfectly fine!

2020 Surprised Us in More Ways Than 1...
💕🤰🏼💕🤯💕🎉💕🥰💕👶💕🤰🏼💕

Hi, YBM Mamas! I’ve taken a long hiatus from social media as there’s been A LOT going on in both my personal and professional life. Here it is in a nutshell:

First and foremost, I’m pregnant 🤰🏼with a baby girl due in just a few short weeks. I never made an announcement because I truly didn’t know what was going to happen with this pregnancy given my history of recurrent loss. I can’t even tell you how fortunate I feel to be here right now and how thankful I will feel when I get to hold this baby girl in my arms 💕

Oh but that’s not all... when I was 15 weeks pregnant (and no one knew aside from my family), our house was hit with COVID. Yep, that was only slightly stressful (everyone did ok, thank goodness!) Then to keep things interesting we decided to sell our house and buy a new one. Both houses almost fell through but thankfully, it all worked out in the end and we are finally settled in our new house 🏡

Needless to say, a lot has been going on in my personal life, but I haven’t stopped working on YBM behind the scenes...I have a new website and e-book (think breastfeeding survival guide) in the works that I can’t wait to share with you all!

While I continue to work on my book and website, I’d love for you to follow along with me here on IG as I navigate the end of my pregnancy journey and start a new season of motherhood 💕

🍁Happy day after Thanksgiving🍁 I hope all of you had a wonderful day yesterday!

My family and I spent the holiday out of town and almost off the grid...but we do have internet and WiFi calling 🎉

The great thing about my virtual practice is that I can take it with me anywhere I go! This week, I was lucky enough to have a few clients reach out to me needing some breastfeeding support. Instead of having to turn them down because I wasn’t home, I was able to help them from the my middle of nowhere cabin.

If you need prenatal or postpartum breastfeeding support, know that I’ll be here ready to help you 💕

⭐️Sore Ni***es⭐️

Sore ni***es are a hot topic for all nursing mamas. There can be many different causes for sore ni***es and each cause needs a different treatment.

Here are some of the most common causes of sore ni***es:
* Improper position and/bad latch
* Baby’s tongue has a restricted range of motion
* Yeast or a skin rash
* Improper fl**ge fit for pumping moms
* Vasospasm’s

Best Treatment:
* Work with an IBCLC!!
* Why? It’s our job to identify the problem and give you a treatment plan. Your job is to know you have a problem, ask for help, and follow the plan you and your LC agree upon.
* Why else? Your sore ni***es may be caused by a few different factors and may need a few different interventions in order to fix the problem(s).

Options to help You Soothe Sore Ni***es:
* Always follow the guidance of your IBCLC first
* Put breast milk on them
* Find a ni**le cream you like
* Look into soothing gel pads
* Consider investing in silver nursing cups

Most women have heard of ni**le cream and gel pads, but many haven’t heard of silver nursing cups like . These cups can be a worthwhile investment for mamas working hard to fix the problem causing their sore ni***es but need some relief while it’s being fixed. Silver is known to have many healing qualities and when combined with breast milk, silver nursing cups can make a big difference for some sore mamas. They are worth looking into!

⭐️October 15, 2017⭐️
I was smiling on the outside, trying to make sure my boys had fun on their mama date at the pumpkin patch, but I was so so sad on the inside. 3 days before this picture was taken I’d had a D&C for a missed miscarriage. It was my second miscarriage. My first was between the 2 boys. In this picture I was telling myself that it would be ok, we’d just try again. Little did I know that I’d go on to have 3 more consecutive miscarriages in less than 1.5 yrs.

When you go through something so awful so many times, you wonder if you’ll ever be ok. You wonder if seeing ultrasound pics and pregnancy announcements will ever not sting. You wonder if you’ll be able to reconcile family plan you had with the reality of your situation. You wonder if you’ll ever feel like you again.

The answer is that time will never help you forget, but it does help you heal. Time helps you be grateful for what you do have. Time helps you feel joy again. Time helps you slowly feel like you again. The new you is different, wiser, and always acutely aware of life’s twists and turns, but it’s you 💕

⭐️Your BestFeeding Class⭐️

Your BestFeeding Class is my virtual private prenatal breastfeeding class. During this class, I spend about 2 hours teaching you and your partner everything you need to know about breastfeeding individualized to your concerns, questions, and medical history. You will learn everything from what to expect once baby is placed in your arms, how to actually breastfeeding, how to handle the bumps in the road and everything in between! After taking my class, your partner will know exactly how to support you and you will feel empowered, confident, and ready to embark on your breastfeeding journey.

I love working with couples before baby arrives. Understanding breastfeeding and what to expect before you are going through it not only increases your confidence, but it allows you to better appreciate the sweet moments and get through the tough ones.

Please DM me with any questions about my class!

Hi 👋 everyone!
It’s been a while since I’ve introduced myself on here. I’m Jen Peters, owner and founder of Your BestMilk. In the pic above you see my whole world - my husband and two little men (who love gator masks 🤷‍♀️). Aside from my most important role of mom and wife, I’m a masters prepared ex ICU nurse turned IBCLC. I’ve been working with moms and babies as a lactation consultant for over 8 years now and decided to launch my virtual private practice on Instagram 3 months before COVID hit. I’m so glad I did because I’ve been able to help many mamas find their BestMilk for their babies despite the shutdown of many prenatal and postpartum lactation services.

I specialize in preparing pregnant mamas for their breastfeeding journey and in helping new mamas reach their breastfeeding goals (ie finding their BestMilk). On this platform, I post breastfeeding tips, tricks, experiences, and sometimes a good meme for comic relief.
I’ll be honest, there are times that mom life and work with my private clients take over and I go longer between posts than I like, but I can promise you that I won’t post meaningless filler fluff just to fill my squares. When I post, it will be good, effective, and useful information. Follow along with me to learn more about how to find Your BestMilk!
