Congrats to our nationally recognized schools - and especially their School Wellness Coordinators/Committees! We're so proud of you.

: 18 San Diego Unified schools have been named America's Healthiest Schools, an annual nationwide award recognizing schools that prioritize the essential health needs of their school community.

This year, schools were recognized in nine categories, including: Strengthening Social-Emotional Health & Learning, Cultivating Staff Well-Being, and Increasing Family & Community Engagement.

San Diego Unified School District students are invited to the Genki Summer Wellness Program at the Japanese Friendship Garden! This will be available in August, just before school starts. Their goal is to help promote health and well-being with the students. This program will be FREE to students within the San Diego Unified School District and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Programming will include basic Japanese philosophies and traditions that promotes healing and gratitude. Each week will consist of 5-half day sessions. Students will practice mindfulness and will be introduced to the Japanese traditional teaching where one learns how to observe, listen, and practice. A traditional tea ceremony to demonstrate the importance of expressing gratitude will be hosted at the last session. The wellness program is a concept using the therapeutic benefits of a Japanese garden in promoting health and well-being.

Seeking Candidates: Student Board Member Nominations Now Open! The San Diego Unified Board of Education is currently accepting candidate applications for the role of Student Board Member for the 2022-23 school year. Interested high school students are encouraged to apply by the filing deadline of Wednesday, May 18.

After the Board accepted a student petition and authorized installment of a student board member in 2019, University City High School student Zachary Patterson was elected by a districtwide student vote and has served alongside the other five trustees.

In 2022, the Board voted to add an additional student board member for the upcoming school year, providing even more opportunity for students to have a direct role in shaping the future of education in San Diego.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month: Did you know? Alcohol addiction is on the rise amongst women since COVID, with a 41 percent rise in heavy drinking days, according to a RAND Corporation study.
The American Addiction Centers (AAC) has been hosting a month-long series called "Sober Thursdays."
Every Thursday in April, they have been speaking with a panel of those who work on the frontlines helping people find their path to recovery, and discuss a number of topics frequently asked about alcohol abuse and addiction. “When I had the opportunity to teach a mental health unit, a unit on sleep and a unit on nutrition [online], the feedback I got from my students was pretty telling,” Terri Clark said. “I’ve got to figure out ways to, when we go back to in-person, weave these lessons in.”
