With a “holiday” this week which often leaves many of us feeling all sorts of not good, I thought it might be good to share a tip about gratefulness and the many negative connotations we often feel when talking about this topic.

Pretty much, find things that make you smile (not things you *should* smile about - things that *actually* make you smile) instead of things you are “thankful” for. You can certainly still be thankful, but acknowledging the joys in life often feels more authentic and fulfilling.

If you’re looking for a therapist this time of year, I do have openings. It’s scary to reach out, but I promise I’m nice and won’t judge you :)

I love empowering my clients and helping them figure out who they are on the inside, and then bringing that person to the outside too.
One part of that is identifying and building on strengths! A question I ask during every intake session is “what are some of your strengths?” And guess what..:
9 out of 10 people have a hard time answering it. Here are a couple tricks I use to help each person answer that question!

I thought it was time for an introduction, so here’s a little about me post!

I’m a licensed clinical social worker in San Diego, meeting with clients all over California via telehealth.

💕 I’m obsessed with my dog & love taking photos of her.
📚 I basically live to read.
🪴 I play the piano and enjoy gardening / indoor houseplants. (Also this song is one of my favorites to play!)

🏳️‍🌈 I identify as bisexual and love working with others in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as women and teens, especially as it relates to empowerment, identity, confidence, and sense of self!

Contact info is on the last slide or in my bio 😊

Physical, emotional, and behavioral boundaries are all important to our overall wellbeing and can actually strengthen your relationships with others!

You'll be amazed at what a difference incorporating these three strategies into your life can make!
Relying on others validation/judgments can have such a long lasting negative impact on our confidence, sense of self, identity, and emotions. Try to focus on empowering yourself and internalize your strength so you don’t feel the need to rely on others!

Appearance based compliments are not always as nice as they seem - it can put a lot of pressure and expectation on people, and cause them to get too wrapped up in their appearance as the primary aspect of their identity since that is what is seemingly valued most by others.
Acknowledging other aspects of their personality, identity, values, characteristics, etc can reinforce aspects that are more important about them, especially ones that may not often be recognized by others, and this can have the amazing result of that person feeling genuinely seen, understood, and appreciated - and wouldn’t we all like to feel that way?!

While both self care and self soothing are important and beneficial, we also need to be able to differentiate between them. People often mistakenly refer to self soothing techniques (such as doing a facial) as self care. Relying too heavily on self soothing can be destructive in the long term, and this is why it is important to incorporate both into your routine.

What are some self care or self soothing strategies you like to use?
