Dr. Paul Hyde The founder of Surgical Associates of La Jolla, Dr. Paul Hyde is a board-certified general surgeon and a board member at XiMED Medical Group. He has previously served as Chief of Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hyde has been elected San Diego's "Top Doctor" by his peers for five years, and one of the "Best Doctors in America" from 2006 to 2010. Dr. Paul Hyde graduated from South Africa's University of Witwatersrand Medical School and also completed his residency in South Africa, becoming a fellow of both the College of Surgeons of South Africa and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Hyde immigrated to the United States in 1978 to train at UC San Diego, becoming board certified in 1980 and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society of American Gastroenterological Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the Society of Surgeons of the alimentary Tract (SSAT), and the San Diego County Medical Society. Dr. Paul Hyde is extremely experienced in performing a variety of complex surgical procedures, including breast surgery, pancreatic surgery, gastric surgery, and thyroid surgery, as well as laparoscopic procedures such as hernia repair, appendectomy, colon resectioning, splenectomy, and anti-reflux surgery. As the senior surgeon in the group, Dr. Hyde continues to inspire his peers and colleagues as one of the most respected clinicians in San Diego. His clinical acumen and surgical skills have brought patients from across the world to seek his help. Dr. Mark Sherman Dr. Mark Sherman has enjoyed a remarkable career since joining with Surgical Associates of La Jolla in 1994. He has served as both the Chief of General Surgery as well as Chairman of the Department of Surgery during his time in practice at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. While working six years on the Board of Trustees for Scripps Health (which oversees all Scripps' hospitals and the Scripps Clinic), he used his unique knowledge to influence and improve healthcare delivery throughout San Diego. He has served as Chairman of XiMED Medical Group, and has taught as an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the UC San Diego School of Medicine since 1994. These tireless efforts have led to his selection by his peers in receiving San Diego's "Top Doctors" award on multiple occasions. Dr. Sherman received his undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University and completed medical school at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He finished his residency at the UCSD Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident in general surgery. A board-certified Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of many professional organizations, including the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), and the San Diego chapter of the Society of General Surgeons, Dr. Sherman is frequently sought for consultation on complex and challenging cases. In his practice, Dr. Mark Sherman focuses on advanced laparoscopy and surgical oncology. Skilled in endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal operations) as well as complex, advanced laparoscopic techniques (colectomy, appendectomy, splenectomy, and hernia repair), he provides a unique skill while treating all of his patients like family. Gastric and pancreatic operations are performed with uncompromising skill. Unique procedures include HIPEC (Hyperthermic IntraPeritoneal Chemotherapy for advanced abdominal malignancies), TIF procedures for the elimination of reflux, and DaVinci Robotic procedures. He remains at the forefront of the most advanced techniques and procedures available in order to best meet the needs of his patients. Dr. Sherman has a reputation as an innovator and leader. His compassionate bedside manner and surgical excellence have made him a most sought after surgeon by his patients and colleagues alike. Dr. Cheryl Olson General surgeon, Cheryl Olson, MD, joined Surgical Associates of La Jolla in 1998. While on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Dr. Olson has been a leader in the community serving as section chief in general surgery, on the Ximed board of directors, as well as president of both the San Diego Society of General Surgeons and the San Diego Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Exemplifying the quality of her care and the utmost respect of her peers, she has been selected as one of "San Diego’s Top doctors” five times in the last 8 years. During her medical education, she served a two-year tour aboard the USS Simon Lake during Desert Storm and shares a deep commitment to military families and retirees. Dr. Olson’s expertise and care of cancer patients includes state-of-the-art procedures for treating breast cancer including ultrasound guided biopsy, breast conservation and the use of accelerated partial breast radiation catheters. All care she provides is highly specialized and tailored to the unique needs of the patient, which may include ni**le and areolar sparing mastectomy followed by immediate reconstruction which are coordinated with an experienced plastic surgeon. In practice, Dr. Olson has a special interest in treating patients with benign and malignant diseases with the most advanced minimally invasive techniques. This includes laparoscopic procedures for cholecystectomy, hernia repair, and removal of portions of the colon. She has expertise in use of the robotic surgery system for the more complex surgical procedures. Dr. Olson is the first general surgeon at Scripps to become skilled in the use of the robotic surgical system and uses it regularly to perform complex colon resections, hiatal hernia repair and adrenalectomy. In 2012 she was the first surgeon at any Scripps hospital to perform a robotic single incision cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal). Dr. Olson performs cytoreductive surgery followed by HIPEC (heated intraoperative chemotherapy) as part of a multidisciplinary program for the treatment of peritoneal surface malgnancy or carcinomatosis. The practice of medicine and surgery is her passion. Dr. Olson considers it a privilege and pleasure to provide her patients with the highest level of coordinated care for any surgical need. She strives to treat each patient with the kindness and expertise she would want for her own family.
