Hey! Hey! Hey! ✌🏾
I got new headshots this week (aka I put my camera on a tripod and hoped for the best) and some new letters to put behind my name (CLEC), so I thought now would be a good time to do .
I’m Rebecca, a San Diego native born and bred, and I’ve bounced around SoCal for work and play for several years. I studied theology and screenwriting in college and have had kind of a weird career trajectory, but it’s mine and I love explaining at parties that I really am a writer, doula, and student FEMM teacher—a fantastic health program that provides both education on fertility awareness and medical management for cycle issues, infertility, and other reproductive health issues. As of this week, I’m now a newly certified lactation educator and counselor with hopes to eventually become an IBCLC.
Like everyone else, COVID has upended my life, but one of the good things about being forced to slow down is that I’ve had more time to engage in other hobbies like making candles—just kidding! I did that once and there’s currently 10 lbs of unused soy wax in my kitchen.
I do love writing though, and I’ve had more time to focus on that which has been great. I wrote a short film script that was optioned earlier this year and currently have a feature-length screenplay in the second round of consideration as part of the Sundance Development Track. I decided to divert some unused vacay funds and buy a new camera about a month ago, and who knows…maybe I’ll get back to filmmaking very soon too. 🙃
Beyond screenwriting, I’m a contributing writer and will be giving a talk on fertility awareness and reproductive justice as part of our next virtual summit on 10/24.
Things interesting me lately include watching Lovecraft Country on HBO, studying abolition, and keeping all of the new houseplants I bought at the beginning of the pandemic alive. (Seriously, if you’ve got plant care tips, feel free to drop them below. Pregnant people and newborns are so much easier for me. 🌱)
