MEET THE DOCTORS:
Dr. Riding graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Zoology 1974. He then attended Ohio State University, graduating in 1978 with his D.D.S. degree. He performed as a general dental officer from 1978 until 1983 when he was accepted into the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery program at Naval Hospital San Diego. He successfully completed the residency in 1986 and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in March of 1990.

He joined the MVOMS family after having completed 30 years of active-duty military with combat action in Vietnam in 1969 as a Marine artillery forward observer, infantry platoon commander, and battery executive officer. As a Naval officer he was deployed on USS Sperry (sub tender) and USS Constellation (aircraft carrier). In the Navy Dental Corps, he has had extensive experience in intravenous sedation, dentoalveolar and implant surgery, pathology, trauma, and reconstructive/orthognathic surgery.

Dr. Riding left the service with a reputation as an incredibly talented, experienced surgeon with a wonderful sense of humor. He has a very close family consisting of his wife and five talented and beautiful daughters, who are the foundation of his life and the source of his sense of humor.

At MVOMS, Dr. Riding has become the staff’s first choice for daily humor and compassion. His patients universally find him empathetic, confident, and reassuring.

Dr. Riding enjoys running, basketball, reading, babysitting grandchildren, and doing whatever his wife and daughters tell him to do!

MEET THE DOCTORS: Thomas V. Brislin Jr., the youngest of six children, grew up in Harveys Lake, Pennsylvania. He’s a natural athlete and enjoyed competing in soccer, volleyball and is an avid water sports enthusiast. Tom was a Varsity Soccer player while he attended Saint Joseph’s University during his undergraduate studies and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. “Crunching numbers,” Tom realized, was not his real passion. He decided to pursue Dentistry (We are glad he did!!!) and in 2011, he graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

After Dental School, Tom was commissioned as a General Dental Officer in the United States Navy and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. In 2013, Lieutenant Brislin was part of Pacific Angel Vietnam, a multi-service Medical and Dental Humanitarian Mission in Vietnam. Tom was Honorably discharged from the US Navy and completed his Oral Maxillofacial Surgery residency training at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was during his residency training that he realized his great interest in the pathology of the head and neck, Implant restorations of missing teeth and advanced sedation techniques.

Tom and his wife, Kirby, have four children. The family returned to Southern California to enjoy the sand, sun, and surf. When he’s not busy transforming smiles with his oral surgery skills, he is spending time with his family at the beach, camping, running or golfing.

MEET THE DOCTORS:
Dr. Smith was born and raised in southern California, he received his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Santa Barbara as a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and completed dental school at UCLA as a Regent Scholar. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy. He completed training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Balboa Naval Hospital in 1981. He served 20 years with the United States Navy. At retirement, he was the Assistant Director of the Navy’s largest Oral and Maxillofacial Residency program at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. He has remained active in education and has been involved in the graduate program at the University of Southern California Dental School.

His special area of interest is major reconstructive maxillofacial surgery, including comprehensive implant rehabilitation, bone grafting procedures, orthognathic surgery, and temporomandibular joint surgery, encompassing arthroscopic, reconstructive, and total joint replacement. He has performed more than 1,500 major maxillofacial procedures for facial reconstruction.

Dr. Smith presently holds hospital staff appointments at Mercy/Scripps Hospital and Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The proud father of three children, he is an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying jogging, downhill skiing, cycling, and traveling for relaxation.

Dr. Smith believes surgical results are improved by taking the time to appreciate his patients’ wishes and expectations. He feels this is an essential aspect of the consultation process. Excellence in patient care is his primary commitment.

MEET THE DOCTORS:
Dr. Fred Hammond spent his childhood years growing up in a very small town on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Dr. Hammond graduated in 1976 from the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry with many honors including selection to the Gorgas Prosthodontic Honor Society. Upon completion of dental school, Dr. Hammond was selected to serve as a General Practice Resident at Naval Hospital San Diego.

Dr. Hammond served for three years as a general dental officer in the U.S. Navy Dental Corp. He served as the clinic oral surgeon for much of that tour so his oral surgery experience and interest grew tremendously during these years.

In 1985, after leaving Guantanamo Bay and retiring from the active-duty Navy, Dr. Hammond returned to San Diego to start a private practice. He joined the group of Drs. Golec, Cutri, Maw, and Berger. The experience gained from working with these fine surgeons was the spring board to the development of a new practice in Mission Valley. In 1992, Dr. Hammond opened the doors to Mission Valley Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Inc.

Dr. Hammond loves his profession and especially enjoys the many wonderful patients for whom he is privileged to care.

Outside of the office, he enjoys playing tennis and has won numerous trophies and awards for tournament victories. When not on the tennis court with his wife, Kathy or friends, he enjoys traveling, photography, Jimmy Buffett music, and the beautiful beaches of San Diego and around the world.
