A series of instagram vs. reality pics from this weekends desert camping getaway 🏕️

Cellulite —-> smooth
Thinner thighs —-> thicker thighs
Flat stomach —-> rolls

These are the things WE see even if nobody else does. What other people see is the joy in your smile and the experience at hand, not the teeny tiny “imperfections” you notice and pick apart yourself.

The “Instagram” version of these pics, even if they’re the tiniest difference is the version we get 99.9% of the time so this is your friendly reminder that our perception is usually not reality when it comes to social media.

When I was 19, my life started to shift.

Over the next decade my day-to-day focus became my body, food, and exercise.

My weight fluctuated (as bodies do), yet even at my thinnest there was always something that could be better, plus it was never sustainable. 

In my 20's my extracurriculars were the 1,200 calories a day club, the keto club, the vegan club, and the intermittent fasting club.

Diet started promptly on Monday after Sunday's binge sesh. Rinse and repeat...for years.

I judged myself, I judged others, and none of it got me anywhere. I was on the hamster wheel of diet culture, and was lucky enough to get off... 

Following my interest in "nutrition" (in attempt to get "skinny"), I enrolled at The Institute for Integrative Nutrition where I became a certified Holistic Health Coach.

Alas, I was ready to do something I was passionate about, and help other people be as "healthy" as me! 

This was my catalyst for realizing my weight obsessed life wasn't healthy at all. I had some work to do on myself before working with any clients.

At 29, I went cold-turkey on my appetite suppressant, adderal, and started working with my first coach to learn about intuitive eating.

I began learning what it looked like to have a healthy relationship with my body, food, and exercise again.

A Taylor Swift glam shot followed by a bunch of pictures from this past week where my initial reaction is “don’t love it.”😖

Whether it’s the cellulite, the stomach rolls, the big b***y or one of the other dozen things I could nitpick.

And here’s the thing, WE ALL DO IT regardless of our size. We look at the picture and think “is that what I really look like?!”

That REACTION isn’t going away, but the way we choose to RESPOND is where we hold our power and ability to move on confidently despite what we see in the photo.

I never do a 180 in that moment or day to loving and appreciating the picture, but I don’t get hung up on it. I don’t let it impact my emotions or confidence the way I once did, and it just takes practice.

It’s usually a quick glimpse, maybeee a do-over, and then keep it moving. Sometimes I just don’t look at all.

The photos we sometimes want to delete represent fond memories that have absolutely nothing to do with your body.

So don’t delete the picture. Plus one day in then it too distant future you’ll look back and think damn I looked good 😉

I’m not sure where I’d be without the hundreds of podcasts I’ve listened to, the body positive people I follow on social media, or my roommate who has a very healthy relationship with food and her body. 

You weren’t born disliking your body. You were surrounded by information and people that told you that there was something wrong or different about your body and that you should want to change it. 

There is an element of healing that wound and there is an element of relearning and our environment plays a massive role in that.

Reunited with Fi and a little outfit dump from my trip back east!

Also for all my girls who struggle feeling good in their clothing from time to time…the key to avoiding body image wardrobe breakdowns and feeling good in what you’re wearing is PREPARATION. Despite the golf outfit debacle, my trip back east went super smooth since I planned out my outfits with my rental ahead of time!

When you look at an old picture of yourself what do you see?

Does the photo transport you right back to the feeling of being self-conscious, insecure, and worrying about how you look in the photo?

If yes, I see you because I spent a whole decade there. Now when I look at photos it’s not about the feeling I had in my body, its about the memory.

I can’t even remember how i was feeling in my body that day, instead I see a woman in her “healing era.” Feeling confident in who she is despite her body.
