Regenerative Medicine and Its Role in Knee Joint Rehabilitation

Regenerative medicine is revolutionizing the approach to knee joint rehabilitation. Unlike conventional treatments that focus on symptom relief, regenerative techniques aim to restore the natural structure and function of the knee.

Regenerative techniques like Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Wharton's Jelly injections aim to harness the body's innate healing capabilities. PRP therapy utilizes the patient's own blood, concentrated with platelets, to promote healing and reduce inflammation in the knee. These platelets release growth factors that aid in tissue repair and regeneration. Similarly, Wharton's Jelly injections, which include stem cells and growth factors can potentially transform into cartilage, aiding in the repair of damaged areas.

KL grading system for OA

The severity of OA can be assessed using the Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) scale, which grades the progression of the disease.

** grade 0 (none): definite absence of X-ray changes of osteoarthritis

** Grade 1 (doubtful): doubtful joint space narrowing and possible osteophytic flipping

** Grade 2 (minimal): definite osteophytes and possible joint space narrowing

** Grade 3 (moderate): moderate multiple osteophytes, definite narrowing of joint space and some sclerosis and possible deformity of bone ends

** Grade 4 (severe): large osteophytes, marked narrowing of joint space, severe sclerosis, and definite deformity of bone ends

Knee Health: The Impact of Regenerative Medicine in Managing Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a debilitating condition characterized by the degeneration of joint cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. Traditional treatments have primarily focused on pain management and, in severe cases, surgical interventions such as joint replacements. However, the emergence of regenerative medicine offers a promising avenue for OA management.

Regenerative medicine harnesses the body's innate ability to heal and regenerate. Techniques like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and stem cell therapy have gained traction in recent years. PRP, derived from a patient's own blood, contains growth factors that can potentially aid in the repair of damaged cartilage. Similarly, stem cells, when introduced into the affected joint, can differentiate into cartilage cells, promoting repair and regeneration. to learn more about our program, schedule a free phone consultation here - https://bit.ly/482xUeH

What are hip labral tear symptoms and treatment options?

Hip labral tears involve the special cartilage that outlines the rim of your hip joint socket, the acetabulum. Up to 55% of patients with hip or groin pain have labral tears.

- Hip pain: Pain in the anterior or side of the hip or groin area. Less common is a pain in the buttocks. Pain may increase with prolonged standing, sitting, pivoting, and impact activities. Labral tear hip pain at night is common.
- Stiffness or loss of motion: A decreased range of motion may be observed with a hip tear as well as limping, needing a banister to climb stairs, and limited walking distance and sitting time.
- Catching: When the hip "catches" an otherwise fluid movement is unintentionally interrupted. Catching is often associated with crepitus.
- Crepitus: Feeling or hearing a clicking, crunching, or popping sound emanating from the hip. This is a sign that cartilage has worn away and is not protecting the bones from friction.

Regenerative Alternatives to PRP Therapy:

Why is Wharton Jelly considered more effective than PRP for patients of any age and with more serious injuries?

As we age, we depend on a variety of medications, treatments, and even dietary changes. What works when we are young adults may not be as effective in our senior years. It follows then, that some regenerative therapies work better on patients depending on their age.

There are several regenerative alternatives to PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy that are used in the field of regenerative medicine.
Wharton’s Jelly (WJ), containing mesenchymal stem cells, has the advantage of introducing new undifferentiated cells to the site of injury which can then act to repair the damage.

- WJ also contains high concentrations of numerous growth factors that stimulate cell growth and repair and have anti-inflammatory properties.

- Additionally, the jelly-like matrix contains hyaluronic acid, collagen fibers, and proteoglycans that can support joint function.
Treatment with WJ therefore doesn’t depend on the body’s ability to produce stem cells.

- The effectiveness of WJ is higher than PRP for patients of any age and for more serious injuries.
