8 things you can do in early labor. ✨
+ Hydrate. The uterus functions most properly when hydrated, leading to more comfortable & more efficient labors. Be sure to sip on liquids throughout. Coconut water, herbal tea, water with electrolytes added, spa water (lemon & cucumber) with trace minerals.
+ Get up & go p*e! An empty bladder will make more room for baby during labor to rotate & descend. It will also allow your uterus to contract & firm up more easily after birth, which can lead to less bleeding.
+ Rest. Ignore. Deny. Repeat. We've said this many times...ignore it until you can't anymore. Of course there is nuance depending on your situation, but for the vast majority of low-risk births, it can serve your mind (& body) well to do your normal as long as you can.
+ Work on a labor project. Our clients have come up with some great ideas over the years. Some of our favorites have been: writing a letter to your baby about the last day you were pregnant with them. Gardening & planting baby trees to watch them grow as your child grows up. Baking cookies for the nurses at the hospital.
+ Go on a walk. Walking serves so many purposes. When we walk briskly with long strides, it opens our psoas muscles & creates more space for baby to descend. When we walk on curbs or up & down stairs, the asymmetries in our pelvis create new spaces for baby to move into. When we move our energy around & breathe in the fresh air, we awaken our senses & open ourselves up to new ideas.
+ Scrub your base boards. An oldie-but-goodie... This one has stood the test of time for a good reason. Spending time in hands & knees to clean base boards keeps our minds busy but our body's in a great position to encourage fetal rotation & more comfortable labor.
+ Cook a postpartum meal & freeze it. Love to cook? This one is for you! It keeps you busy & it serves a very real need. And when you eat the meal later, you can thank your younger self & bring compassion & gratitude within - such an important part of self-care.
We would love to know what you would add to the list!
