It’s Wellness Wednesday! We hope you give yourself a moment to reflect on caregiving positives today. Raising children from homes with addiction issues has unique challenges. We know how easy it is to get caught up in the challenges we face as caregivers. Sometimes we can benefit from taking a moment to pause and focus on the behaviors we appreciate in our kids.

Please comment and share how your kids are champions in your family!

Happy Monday friends! We want to take a moment today to say we are so proud of all the families out there who are working to heal from the impact of addiction.

It’s easy to identify the problems addiction causes. Just don’t let those problems be the only thing you pay attention too. Notice the resilience, courage, intelligence and tenacity it takes to heal as a family as well.

Keep up the great work and remember to practice self care along the way ♥️

Our Wellness Wednesday message for today is find ways to show kids that they aren’t alone while teaching them to understand what they deserve and need from the adults in their lives.

Kids who’ve experienced a parent that is stuck in addiction may have had periods in their lives where they didn’t get their needs met. It’s not that they don’t deserve adequate care or that their parent doesn’t love them. A person who is trapped in addiction will struggle to meet their own needs in addition to the needs of the kids they love.

When kids are given tools to understand their loved one’s illness it helps them separate the parent they love from the illness that hurts.

Our tip today is simple. Remind kids that there are other kids out there just like them. When you have the opportunity, ...

Hello friends! Today we want to motivate caregivers to have patience and offer support while kids adjust to the often lower structure of summer.

We know this time of year can be hard for kids but also caregivers as they try to juggle life outside of the school year.

Please comment if you have helpful summer resources!

Children from homes with addiction issues often experience a big uncomfortable feeling called shame. Practicing positive self talk can help correct thinking errors kids have about their parents illness like the belief that their parents addiction is their fault.

For Wellness Wednesday we are keeping with Stinkin’ Thinkin’ and positive self talk.

Big uncomfortable feelings feed off of stinky thoughts. And one of the first steps kids can practice in regulating big emotions is to recognize when their Thinkin’ is Stinkin’!

Common Stinkin’ Thinkin’ for kids from homes with addiction issues is that
💨 they are somehow to blame for their parent’s illness.
💨 that they need to fix their parents problems.
💨 that if they behave in certain ways or do certain things they can control their parents substance use.

The truth is
❤️ kids are never the reason for a parent’s addiction.
❤️kids can’t cure their parent’s addiction.
❤️ kids can’t control whether their parent stays stuck in addiction or gets healthy.

This is a sticker from May’s Mailer to remind kids not to feed the anger monster!

Our tip today is to help kids recognize the difference between Stinkin’ Thinkin’ and positive self-talk.

The way we talk to ourselves is really powerful. Negative thoughts can make big uncomfortable feelings even bigger and more out of control while positive self talk can help us regulate our emotions and get through life challenges a little more smoothly.

Happy Wednesday friends!

Our suggestion today is for caregivers to remind the children they love that they CAN’T control their parents addiction but they CAN be ok by taking good care of themselves and making healthy choices like not using drugs or alcohol themselves.
