When John Carr, MD, endocrinologist in private practice, was diagnosed with a carotid artery dissection, he knew expert care was critical. The condition severely restricted blood flow to his brain and put him at risk for stroke.

On the recommendation of colleagues, he turned to UC San Diego Health, where Alexander Khalessi, MD, a neurosurgeon, performed reconstructive surgery with stents to restore normal blood flow.

How will the McGrath Outpatient Pavilion transform health care in central and south San Diego and set the stage for increased access across UC San Diego Health?

✅ Streamlines patient experience: The integrated facility brings subspecialty consults, imaging, infusion, pharmacy and outpatient surgery together so patients get more done in fewer visits. New parking and drop-off zones make access even easier.

✅ Provides more cancer care: Radiation oncology and clinical trials join existing infusion services in Hillcrest, bringing more cancer care options closer to home. Advanced imaging and treatment technologies, plus a new brachytherapy suite, boost access to our top-ranked cancer services.

✅ Enhances care opportunities systemwide: McGrath supports our broader strategy to concentrate expertise and multidisciplinary care at centers of excellence that provide specialized care as well as core services. After surviving a 13,000-volt electrical injury, losing his right arm and undergoing 20 surgeries in four months, Christian Arreola is defying the odds.

Arreola had incredible care from the team at the Regional Burn Center at UC San Diego Health, Katharine Hinchcliff, MD, hand surgeon, who worked to preserve as much of his arm as possible to support future prosthetic use and the guidance of his occupational therapist, Jennie McGillicuddy. He learned to use a myoelectric prosthetic and proudly threw out the first pitch at the San Diego Padres game.

“Jennie helped motivate me in more ways than she will ever know, and she expanded that resilience in me to figure out what I can do moving forward,” Arreola said.
