Phage therapy: From biological mechanisms to future directions
Today, I published a review paper in the journal Cell with colleagues Chip Schooley, Graham Hatfull & Vivek Mutalik. Given that some of the research we discussed was directly influenced by our experiences with Tom's case and others that followed (such as Mallory Smith, Isabelle Carnell Holdaway, John Wilson, John Haverty and Greg Breed), I feel very proud. Together, we are moving the needle. PHAGE ON!

NIH-supported clinical trial of phage therapy for cystic fibrosis begins
It's finally happening! So excited to see NIAID's first phage therapy trial launched to treat multi-drug resistant bacterial infections in cystic fibrosis patients under the leadership of Robert Schooley at IPATH through the Antimicrobial Resistance Leadership Group in collaboration with Walter Reed, Adaptive Phage Therapeutics. Special thanks to the Mallory Smith Legacy Fund for additional funding at IPATH. It's especially gratifying to see the quote from Tony Fauci in this press release.
NIH-supported clinical trial of phage therapy for cystic fibrosis begins
The trial is evaluating whether the bacteriophage therapy is safe and able to reduce the amount of bacteria in the lungs of volunteers.

Salt In My Soul: Poignant Film Calls Attention To The Need For Phages For Antibiotic Resistance
Phage therapy could save many lives. Hopefully, sharing Mallory Smith's story will boost research into cystic fibrosis, growing antibiotic resistance, and the promise of phages.

Many of you will remember Mallory Smith, one of the earliest patients we tried to save but didn't make it in time. Her parents believe that phage therapy could have saved her life and since then have advocated fearlessly, generated hundreds of thousands of dollars to support phage therapy research, and published Mal's memoir, Salt in My Soul. The documentary based on her story is coming soon! Don't miss it!
