“Tomorrow [May 1] will see the first of two full moons this May. The Moon will be full at 6.23pm [10:42am Pacific Time] to welcome Beltane the Celtic festival of early summer with its celebration of flowers, growth, fire and fertiliy.

The names of the full moons perfectly reflect the joyous springing of this time of year. The Celtic people gazed upon the 'Hawthorn Moon', and the 'Mother's Moon' and the Colonial Americans called it the 'Milk Moon'.

The Medieval English Almanacs refer to the 'Hare Moon' and the Cherokee named it the 'Planting Moon' whilst the Oglala Tribe call their May full moon 'The Moon of Shedding Ponies'. (My goat, Oscar, is definitely having his annual coat shed!).

I have illustrated the 'Flower Moon' which is the name given it by many cultures and people including the Dakota Sioux, the Algonquin as well as European and Colonial American Almanacs.

The second moon in a month is traditionally called a 'Blue Moon'. (Apparently it happens once every 2.8 years).
