Scabies is a mite that burrows under the skin and is not visible to the naked eye. The mite can pass from person to person through direct skin to skin contact or contact with infected bedding, clothes, and furniture. Mites can live outside a human host for just 3-4 days.

It can take 2-6 weeks for people to develop symptoms of scabies infestation. Oftentimes it causes an itchy rash, particularly at night. Sores can develop from constant itching, which can lead to scabs and crusts. Scabies typically occurs on the hands, arms, and areas covered by clothing or jewelry. Anyone can get scabies, but those with compromised immune systems can be at a greater risk.

This is your reminder to check your skin for changes in your moles! Do you know where all your moles are? Do you know what your moles look like? You should be checking your skin every few months for changes. How can you tell if something looks suspicious? You should be using the ABCDE's of melanoma as a guideline.

A- Asymmetry: one side of your mole does not look like the other side
B- Border: Is your mole irregular shaped or jagged
C- Color: are there multiple colors in your mole?
D- Diameter: Is your mole larger than a pencil eraser?
E- Evolving: Your mole is changing overtime

Any concerning spots should be looked at by a board certified dermatologist.

Now you can! I’m Elan Newman, M.D., a San Diego-based, American Board of Dermatology- certified dermatologist and tele-dermatologist, and the founder of DermConsult.

DermConsult is the next evolution in teledermatology. At DermConsult, my goal is to give you the highest quality digital dermatology experience possible.

When creating DermConsult, I wanted to make a digital service that would be affordable, user-friendly, fast, secure, and most of all, helpful for our patients.

· The cost of a visit with me is about the same as a regular office visit copayment (and oftentimes less).

· You can make a visit on your own time. All I need is some photos and a bit of medical history and I’ll get to work. Most of our cases get a response within 24 hours so you can often pick up your prescriptions on the way home from work or school.

· All of our dermatologists are currently practicing, Board- certified, US-based dermatologists. Each of us is a real dermatologist with current credentials. Here, just look me up! (link to CA med board)

· Because our platform is powered by Spruce Healthcare, one of the pioneers in teledermatology tech, you can know that your information is transmitted in a safe and secure manner.

· Finally, not all conditions can be treated in a digital clinic (and some of them should not be for safety reasons). If I cannot treat you via this platform, I’ll help you find a local board-certified dermatologist who can. The most important thing for me is that I do the right thing for you and get you the medical attention that you need.
