On Saturday, July 26, 2025, we had to say goodbye not just to a colleague, but to a sister in spirit—a compassionate soul whose life was a testament to care, courage, and community. You were more than a friend; you were family. As a fellow nurse, you walked beside us in service and sacrifice, always putting others first with grace and unwavering strength.

Your dedication to the San Diego Black Nurses Association was inspiring. You gave your time, your wisdom, and your heart—helping lift others and pave the way for future generations. Thank you for everything. Your legacy will live on in every life you touched, every patient you comforted, and every nurse you mentored.

Though we mourn your passing, we celebrate your life. You may no longer be with us in body, but your spirit remains—etched in our hearts, forever a part of us.

Rest in peace, Dr. Michelle Booker Stewart. You will be deeply missed and eternally cherished.

SDBNA recognizes that July is Fibroid Awareness Month. According to the National Institute of Health, 80% of women will be affected by fibroids, noncancerous tumors, by the age of 50. Black women are disproportionately impacted, and up to 90% can be affected. Recently, celebrities like Venus Williams and Lupita Nyong'o have used their platforms to bring awareness to this growing issue.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, who underwent surgery to remove 30 of the uterine growths known as fibroids, is launching a research grant devoted to the chronic condition: “We must reject the normalization of female pain.”
