Happy Juneteenth!” For those who still do not understand why some Black/African Americans celebrate Juneteenth. “Juneteenth is Monday, June 19, 2023! Juneteenth is the oldest-known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States, first recognized by the state of Texas. It is also known as “Freedom Day,” “Juneteenth National Independence Day,” or “Emancipation Day.”
“Now I’ve been free, I know what a dreadful condition slavery is. I have seen hundreds of escaped slaves, but I never saw one who was willing to go back and be a slave.” –Harriet Tubman (1820–1913), American abolitionist and political activist.

“Every year, we must remind successive generations that this event triggered a series of events that one by one define the challenges and responsibilities of successive generations. That’s why we need this holiday.” –Texas Rep. Albert Ely Edwards (1937–2020), sponsor of Texas House Bill 1016 (1979), which made Emancipation Day (“Juneteenth”) a statewide paid holiday.” Go to https://www.almanac.com/juneteenth for the full article.

One on One. One at a Time.

Angelle (she/her/hers) has been an HIV/AIDS advocate/activist in the LGBTQIA+ community since 2006 as a certified S.I.S.T.A./T-S.I.S.T.A trainer supporting all women of color and transgender women of color through the S.I.S.T.A Project (Sisters Informing Sisters About Topics on AIDS), in the South Central Los Angeles area.

She is a very proud parent of a transgender teen, and through her child's transition she noticed the need for support in communities of color, especially the African American communities in North and Southeast San Diego Counties. It was because of this need in the Black/PoC LGBTQIA+ communities that the GPC support groups have formed.

Currently there are two groups with the support of the YMCA Tay Academy/Our Safe Place in North County San Diego: Escondido and San Diego Youth Services as well as a collaboration with City of San Diego Library Branch Valencia Park/Malcolm X and South Bay Community Services located in the Southeast San Diego area.
