I recently listened to a podcast where a researcher in evolutionary psychology explained something that made me reflect on how we live today.
For most of human history, we lived in small villages. We only knew what was happening in our immediate environment: our people, our daily responsibilities, and our local life. That was the natural “size” of the world that our nervous system was designed to handle.
Today, we are exposed to the struggles and crises of thousands of people we don’t know and cannot help. Your nervous system still reacts as if all of it is urgent because it is doing exactly what it was built to do: care, monitor, and protect. But this constant global noise is exactly why so many of my clients - and maybe you too - feel stressed and exhausted.
JOMO is something that I’m embracing more and more because I learned that my energy is my most precious strategic resource. Having experienced burnout myself, I know that I cannot be the creator of my life if I am constantly reacting to a world I wasn't built to handle. By choosing to "miss out" on the noise, I can show up with full presence for my clients and my own life.
If you want to regulate your nervous system and reclaim your energy, part of the work is intentionally reducing the amount of input around you.
Take a moment to reflect: Is the "size" of your world today something your nervous system can actually handle? I encourage you to write down one digital "noise" you can silence this week to find your balance.
