Measles & International Travel: What Parents Need to Know

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be dangerous, especially for babies and young children. About 1 in 5 people in the U.S. who get measles will be hospitalized and it is so contagious that 9 out of 10 people near a person with measles will become infected if they are not protected. Measles typically begins with a high fever (may spike to more than 104ยบ), cough, runny nose (coryza) and red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis). A red rash follows 3-5 days after initial symptoms begin. Measles is still common in many parts of the world and cases in the United States typically originate from unvaccinated international travelers.

The best way to protect your child is to ensure that they are fully vaccinated at least 2 weeks before departing on an international trip. Two doses of the MMR vaccine provides 97% protection against measles while one dose provides 93% protection.

If an infant is less than 6 months of age, they cannot receive an MMR vaccine yet, but they may have some protection from antibodies passed to them during pregnancy. Consider delaying travel to locations with measles outbreaks to avoid risks of severe illness.

If an infant under 12 months of age will be traveling, they should:
โ€ข Get an early MMR dose at 6 through 11 months and at least 2 weeks prior to travel
โ€ข Follow the recommended schedule and get another MMR dose at 12 through 15 months and a final MMR dose at 4 through 6 years of age

For children 12 months of age and older, they should:
โ€ข Get their first MMR dose immediately in addition to the other vaccines recommended at that age
โ€ข Get a second MMR dose 28 or more days after the first dose and at least 2 weeks prior to travel

After returning from international travel, watch for symptoms for a period of 3 weeks. If there are any concerns regarding a possible measles infection, please do not send your child to school and call your local CPCMG office to discuss next steps.

For more information about measles, please visit our CPCMG Health Hub or download The Pediatrician Next Door Podcast, hosted by CPCMG Girard Pediatrician, Dr. Wendy Hunter, that focuses on spotting and stopping the spread of measles.

You may have heard about the H5N1 bird flu virus being found in milk but be aware โ€“ it was found in raw milk, which is not safe to drink. Be sure to buy pasteurized milk at the grocery store. The pasteurization process heats milk to a specific temperature for a set period of time to kill harmful bacteria and viruses that can make us very sick, especially young children and pregnant women.

โ€‹Raw milk is not safe to drink, because it can carry harmful bacteria and other germs. Learn more how to protect your family from getting sick.

The NCAA Tournament brackets for menโ€™s and womenโ€™s basketball are live โ€“ itโ€™s officially March Madness! Last year, a record 68 million people placed bets or took part in bracket contests. Thanks to ongoing improvements in technology, it is very easy to bet on sporting events every single day using apps on digital devices. Young people are at risk of falling into a costly and potentially addictive activity. Learn more from Dr. Randall Metsch, pediatrician at CPCMG Encinitas.

March Madness is in full swing and college basketball teams across the country are playing for a spot in the NCAA tournament. Maybe youโ€™ve been asked to make a friendly wager with a friend or create a bracket for a workplace pool. Unfortunately, this is also a time for young people to take part in...

Love it or hate it, daylight saving time is next weekend. We will โ€œspring forwardโ€ one hour on the clock, impacting our sleep routines. If you start today, you can help your family ease into the time change by moving bedtime back 15 minutes before the usual bedtime. Continue to adjust the time every few days so when Saturday, March 9 rolls around, the adjustment wonโ€™t be as difficult. โฐ๐ŸŒœ๐ŸŒž

Measles is highly contagious disease that is spread through the air, by infectious droplets, and on surfaces. What starts out as a bad cold with symptoms like fever, cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis (pink eye) leads to a rash that covers the body. The complications of measles can be deadly: pneumonia and encephalitis, a brain infection.

In just the first two months of 2024, a total 35 cases have already been reported in 15 states including California. Compare this to a total of 58 cases reported during 2023, and you can understand why there is great concern for this preventable disease. Learn more about measles and how to protect your family.

Most kids start to lose their baby teeth at age five or six, but every child is unique. Some may start to lose their teeth as early as four years old and others as late as seven years old. It usually takes five to seven years for all the baby teeth to be replaced by permanent teeth. Remember that your child will still need to brush their teeth at least twice a day and see a dentist regularly for check ups. ๐Ÿฆท

โ€ข Include at least one vegetable with lunch and dinner.
โ€ข Choose healthy meats like chicken breast, turkey breast and other lean meats (avoid processed meats).

โ€ข Choose plant-based proteins (nuts, beans, tofu, edamame, nut butters).
โ€ข Avoid eating or cooking fried foods and use small amounts of olive oil or avocado oil when cooking.

Research has found that young children whose parents read to them daily have been exposed to at least 290,000 more words by the time they enter kindergarten than kids who arenโ€™t read to regularly. Depending on how much daily reading time you spend with your kids, that number can go up to over a million words. All that exposure to words makes it easier for kids to expand their vocabularies. ๐Ÿ“”+ ๐Ÿ‘ถ= โค

Unfortunately, a common injury for kids is preventable โ€“ burns caused by hot water or other hot liquids, fire, electrical contact, and chemicals. Avoid in home burns with the following tips:
โ€ข Set the hottest faucet temperature on your water heater to under 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid tap water burns.
โ€ข Avoid carrying your child while cooking or holding hot drinks like coffee, tea or soup.
โ€ข Do not leave food cooking on the stove and make sure your child cannot reach the stove.
โ€ข Make sure appliances like irons, curling irons and hair dryers are out of reach during use (and afterwards when they are cooling down).
โ€ข Put protective screens around fireplaces, woodstoves, and other heat sources.
โ€ข Some appliances, radiators and vents will get very hot and stay hot even after they are turned off. Be aware of what might need a screen to protect your child.
โ€ข Keep lit candles in high places where they cannot be touched.
โ€ข Store matches and lighters up and away from your childโ€™s reach.
โ€ข Lock up flammable liquids.

Reading out loud to your baby or young child will improve their cognitive development, or how they develop their ability to think and understand the world around them. Scientific research shows that in the first few years of life, more than one million new neural connections are formed every second. When your child hears you reading out loud, the cells in their growing brain will grow new and strengthen existing connections. These connections help form a strong foundation for intelligence and understanding. Reading out loud will also help expand their vocabulary (and understand the meaning of those words) and learn how to speak.

Your childโ€™s reading skills are important to their success in school, work, and life in general. Ensure their success by starting to read out loud to them at a very early age. Learn more from Dr. Annalisa Abjelina, pediatrician at CPCMG Wildomar.

Developing a love of books starts at an early age with the stories read to us by our parents. On National Family Literacy Day, CPCMG celebrates the importance of reading aloud to your infant which will encourage bonding, brain development and builds a lifelong love of books and reading.

In the United States, our laws define human trafficking as use of force, fraud, or coercion to compel a person into commercial s*x acts or labor or services against his or her will. Sadly, children make up 27% of all human trafficking victims worldwide. If you are aware of someone who is believed to be a victim of human trafficking, call the Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 which is open 24/7, 365 days a year. A bubble bath sounds like a fun time for kids, but many bubble bath products (and other foaming soaps) contain detergents that can strip the skin of its natural oils, drying out the skin versus moisturizing the skin. In addition, the fragrances and other chemicals sometimes found in these products can irritate skin. Opt for natural products that are non-toxic and hypoallergenic. ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ›
