Embrace the journey

"My third birth was a journey. When I found out I was pregnant with our rainbow baby, I knew I would be trying for a VBA2C. [*IB note: a 'rainbow baby' refers to a birth following pregnancy loss/losses or a stillbirth.] I planned a birth at The Farm with an amazing team of midwives and my doula. The night we made the two-hour trip to The Farm, my doula was with us every step of the way. I was surrounded by some amazing people that night. Three midwives, a birth photographer, my husband, my two older children and of course my doula. I labored all night, but something wasn't quite right. My body wasn't progressing, and my baby's heart rate was dropping with every contraction. My midwife felt it would be best to transfer to the hospital to have everything checked, and we agreed. She said, 'Your baby is trying to tell you something.' Looking back, I know I was still in shock. Everything was moving so fast and didn't feel quite real. Here I was, being told yet again that I was about to have a C-section. The moment it became real was when the nurse handed me the consent forms. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I couldn't sign it right away. I just couldn't. This is one of the most memorable moments of my birth. And my doula was there. She was there to cry with me and to comfort me. She reminded me how strong and brave I was and that I had not failed. That everything was going to be okay and that I was doing the right thing for my baby. I will always remember that moment of support from an amazing woman. My birth photographer actually captured this moment. This image is hanging in my home.
We welcomed our rainbow baby that day, our third boy!"
