But water is good for us? Well, there is a time and a place for everything and some new evidence suggests that the time for water is not while ingesting foods high in sugar. In general, naturopaths usually advocate for avoiding water DURING mealtimes because it can dilute your stomach acid, leading to impaired digestive function. We also know thatproper stomach acid production is essential to blood sugar regulation,
so this could be a major reason that we see higher spikes when we dilute our stomach acid with water.

There is alot more to be studied to fully understand this mechanism. But Thanksgiving is right around the corner and having a plan around consuming those holiday sweets is a good idea, especially if you have
issues with blood sugar regulation. Saving your water consumption for 30 minutes prior to and after mealtimes is an easy strategy to improve this response.

What are some other tips to consuming sugary foods in healthier ways? Making sure you pair sugar consumption with protein, fat, and fiber is essential, saving the desert for last! Also, if you are able to move
your body after consuming sugar that will shuttle the sugar into your muscle fibers where it will be utilized for quick energy. A ten minute walk or 20 body weight squats after meals is a good habit to get into.

Striking a balanace between enjoying some of the foods we love in moderation and staying healthy can be challenging. We hope these tricks help you feel good about your food choices this upcoming holiday!

Today is .sarahwaterhouse last day at BioMed! We are so proud of the work we have done together. Many of you have experienced Dr. Sarah's compassion, humanity, and professionalism over the past 3 years. It isn't obvious the sacrifices we have to make in this profession, and we could not express enough how much she has gone above and beyond for us.

In the modern day sea of health experts, Dr. Sarah is truly a “wow” doctor, and we know she will carry with her the type of medicine we believe in and fight for. It is bittersweet to see her leave. BioMed will certainly feel different without you, Sarah. Thanks for growing with us, standing beside us in defense of our purpose, and being a dear friend. Cheers to YOU!

The human nervous system is a complex highway of energy running through our bodies and impacting every single thing we do both consciously and subconciously. Such an intricate network creates a lot of room for imbalance and dysfunction. We find ourselves as naturopathic doctors having to frequently address issues of the nervous system so that we can get to deeper healing.

One target of therapy in our practice is the vagus nerve. This is the main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, the branch of our autonomic nervous system responsible for functions related to “rest and digest” amongst many other functions. It is very common in our modern society for people to become stuck in “fight or flight” - meaning the sympathetic part of the autonomic nervous sytem becomes dominant.

Stimulating the vagus nerve can allow people to shift away from the “fight or flight” response. It can can help stimulate digestion, improve sleep, and decrease anxiety. However, few people know that the vagus nerve exerts control on our immune system as well. When we suffer from either acute of chronic infection our immune system triggers an inflammatory cascade in the body. For many, this can become unregulated and result in long term health conditions (autoimmune disease, severe allergies, mast cell activation, cancer to name a few). The vagus nerve plays a major role in regulating this inflammation and helping your body through a healthy infection recovery.

Do you ever wonder why spas always seem to be overflowing with an abundance of cucumber infused water? Well it turns out it is not just some gimmicky beverage and that adding cucumber to your water can
provide some real health benefits.

Notably, cucumber is high in potassium which is a great electrolyte to help with muscle recovery as well as helping to lower blood pressure. It is also encouraged in spas for its potential to aid weight loss and create healthy looking skin. This is because cucumbers contain high levels of B vitamins and silica to support skin health, high amounts of vitmain K to support healthy tissues, and has mild diuretic properties to help you keep off those extra fluid retaining pounds.

Is cucumber water going to completely tranform your health? No. Is it a delicious way to encourage more water consumption while also having some real health benefits? Absolutely. So let this post serve as a reminder to cool down with cucumber water in this summer heat. Pro tip: peel the cucumers before slicing to remove the skin that could be holding onto toxins.

Dementia, and Alzheimer’s dementia in particular, is a complex disease that we do not fully understand. There are many contributing factors as to why someone may be at risk, but many of them involve the way we process and use fats in the body. Here are some things we do know when it comes to fat metabolism and dementia.

Both too high and too low levels of “good cholesterol”, HDL, are linked with increased risk. As for the “bad cholesterol”, LDL, high variability in your levels is what puts you at greatest risk for dementia not just having high LDL. This shows there is no “bad” and “good” cholesterol, everything serves a purpose in the body and healthy balance is key.

Certain cholesterol transport proteins do, however, increase your risk. Greater amounts of apolipoprotein B, a protein associated with shuttling LDL around in the body, is linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

The greatest genetic factor we know of associated with Alzheimer’s is linked to, you guessed it - lipid metabolism. The gene, apolipoprotein E (APO-E), codes for lipoproteins that are responsible for the transport and metabolism of various lipids in the body. In the central nervous system this protein is responsible for delivering cholesterol to the cells. there are multiple variants of this gene and one in particular, APO-E4, is associated with greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s. In fact 40-50% of people with Alzheimer’s carry the gene variant.

So while we do not have all the answers yet about this disease, we certainly do know enough to make a dent in preventing it. If you are interested in assessing your risk and optimizing your lipid medicine, we would love to work with you! DM us or go to our website for more
information.

Estrogen does not cause breast cancer, actually it helps to prevent it.

Many of our patients are weary to begin hormone replacement therapy for fear of increasing breast cancer risk. This fear stems from a 1991 Women’s Health Initiative study that, quite frankly, was poorly run and full of errors.

A 19 year follow up study was conducted and the results are quite different. They show a 22% reduction in risk of developing breast cancer using estrogen alone. That reduction increases to 29% in combination with progesterone.

Not only is estrogen protective to breast tissue it also prevents cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, dementia and reduces symptoms of menopausal hot flashes.

There are so many reasons to consider hormone replacement therapy as we age. If you are considering HRT, finding a doctor well versed in the therapy is key. Please don’t hesistate to reach out for more information or to schedule a consultation with one of our doctors to learn more!

Humans are meant to walk, it is that simple. Natural selection has fine tuned our physiology over millions of years to allow us to walk - freeing the use of our hands for other activities necessary for survival. And with this evolution, the rest of our physiology grew to become metabolically dependent on us using our body this way.

So it is no suprise to see the profound health benefits of walking. Not only does it drasitically reduce our risk for heart disease - it also helps regulate our blood sugar, improve our mood, control our weight, and can even extend our lives. Studies suggest a goal of 10,000 daily steps to unlock all of these benefits.

Modern life has become drastically more sedentary and we find ourselves having to pencil in some bipedal time. With the amazing health benefits and low cost, there is little reason not to for most. So our question for you today is...have you gotten in a walk today?

Spring is here and so are this month’s specials!

If you have yet to try a NAD+ IV, now is the time. NAD+ increases energy by helping your mitochondria crank out ATP (AKA cellular energy). Benefits include anti-aging effects, improved energy, less anxiety, better sleep, improved cognitive function, and reduced inflammation.

We are also offering free body impedence analysis scans this month. BIA is a method used to estimate body composition, including body fat percentage, lean body mass, hydration levels and more. A great tool to accompany any weight loss program!

If you feel that you could use some extra help and resources to help lose weight, we are also offering 30 minute weight specific consultations through April. We will help you develop a diet and exercise plan while providing additional resources to help you on your weight loss journey. We are offering this for patients and non-patients.

DM with any questions or for more information!

Weight gain can sometimes be a very straight forward health concern.
Poor diet and lack of exercise are at the root of this for the majority
of people. However, weight gain can sometimes be much more complicated
than that.

Hormones, for example, are another very common culprit of weight gain
that we see in both our male and female patients. The stress hormone,
cortisol, will cause weight gain as will a lack of thyroid hormone
(hypothyroidism). And one of the joys of weight gain associated with
aging is our declining s*x hormone production.

However, if your doctor isn’t talking to you about inflammation then a
common cause may be missed. Inflammatory cytokines can run rampant in
our body for many reasons - infection, unregulated blood sugar, injury.
Acutely this is not problematic. It is when inflammation is chronic that
fat tends to accumulate as a result. Chronic sources of inflammation are
commonly infections (parasites, candida, viruses like EBV for example)
and toxins (environmental or food for example).

A truly holistic approach to weight loss should always address
inflammation and inflammation triggers!
