Cardiac arrest is one of medicine’s most serious emergencies — more than 75% of patients don’t survive beyond the hospital. One year ago, Bonita resident Douglas Erns beat the odds after going into sudden cardiac arrest while being evaluated for chest pain at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center.

Stabilized at Sharp Chula Vista using an advanced technique called extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), he was transferred to Sharp Memorial Hospital for continued expert extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) care. Thanks to the expertise and coordination of both teams, and Mr. Erns' quick action in getting to the ER, he did what many cardiac arrest patients do not: He went home.

Today, Mr. Erns returned to thank the caregivers at Sharp Chula Vista and Sharp Memorial who saved his life — and to celebrate his birthday with a cake from his hometown favorite, Hans & Harry's Bakery Corp.
