Life has changed! 83% expect to have telemedicine as an ongoing service for medical care. Telemedicine is a fantastic tool used in conjunction with in- person care, or in some cases, in isolation to manage musculoskeletal injury/ conditions. JBPT has been managing people’s symptoms remotely with great success over the last two years! Start your telemedicine journey with a clinician that has experience!

Doctor.com surveyed 1,800+ patients to learn how they use telemedicine today and how it will impact their access to care in the future.

HOW MUCH REST IS BEST??Of course we need to rest new injuries to allow proper healing responses to occur. But what happens when we rest excessively? Unfavorable secondary changes to local tissue and central (brain/spinal cord) processing can occur, leading to fear/avoidance of movement, poor rehab outcomes, and over time deconditioning 🌀 of the whole system (your body). Speak to your rehab specialist to understand what rest is best and how to start moving again.

Fear of pain and avoidance of movement can come about for many different reasons, and is a huge blocker to recovery and successful pain management. Past experiences of pain and previous medical advice can add to unnecessary fear of symptoms, and cause your body to become over protective/ aware of what you feel. Your body is strong and resilient. Speak to your physical therapist to better understand your symptoms, decrease fear, and start moving again.

Chronic pain is very complex, but is simply defined. If your symptoms are outlasting the healing timeline of your initial injury, there may be secondary changes to your nervous system that need to be addressed with a different treatment approach. Are you consistently pushing through worsening pain? Excessively avoiding movement because it hurts? Speak to your local pain specialist (physical therapist, chiropractor, pain psychologist, PM&R doctor) to better understand your persistent symptoms and improve your quality of life.

The BioPsychoSocial model (and cycle) of pain. All pain has these components, but a lot of folks struggle to understand how this helps them better self-manage. Does your pain get worse when you’re stressed? Do your personal and work relationships impact (and/or are they impacted by) how you feel physically? And how do positions, movements, and activities affect your symptoms? Are there other things that negatively (or positively!) affect your pain? Reflect on your “pain profile” so you can prioritize treatment and take the steps towards better pain management.
