If you have found hiding to be a strategy that’s been effective in taking care of yourself—to have the privacy to be free, to be whoever you want, to do whatever you want without anyone bothering you…that is a joy indeed.

Similar to children playing hide and seek, we also long to be found. There is no worse feeling than hearing the game going on and feeling like nobody will find you.

It is a core need to want to be recognized and valued for being ourselves. We want to be recognized, to be held for who we are. Sometimes being found is just about being able to see, and being able to be seen, by each other.

“My son is on the severe end of the autism spectrum.”

“We’re all a little autistic– it’s a spectrum.”

“I’m not autistic but I’m definitely on the spectrum.”

Autism is on a spectrum, but not the spectrum that these statements refer to.

People think you can be “a little autistic” or “extremely autistic,” the way a paint colour could be a little red or extremely red- like a color gradient (which is not a spectrum).

The truth is, autism spectrum means being impacted in all different aspects and traits of the spectrum. There’s a reason people like to say that “if you have met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” Because everyone’s traits manifest differently- an autistic person presents slightly differently from each other.

That’s because autism isn’t one condition. It is a collection of related neurological conditions that are very intertwined.

So next time, help someone understand that a spectrum is a classification of different traits- not the severity of traits.

In life’s important areas, what are you not saying no to—even though your body is signaling no? And where have you ignored or denied the yes that wanted to be said?

Our sense of health and wholeness takes just a little practice of attuning within and asking questions.

Tell us what you discover- what do you need to say no to? Or say more yes to?

Not being heard over a long period of time can lead to stress responses when you try to communicate your feelings. You may feel like you have to:
-Say whatever you think people want to hear
-You talk too much, fearing you would lose people if there is a pause
-You don’t know how to stop listening to someone who talks a lot, and don’t know how to navigate the situation with grace
-You often feel like you never get a turn to speak, others are taking up all the space
-You assume you will be misunderstood or misjudged so you overly explain yourself in everything

At the core of the stress response, is the desire to connect with people. The stress makes it really hard to do.

Attuning to yourself is the first step to connection. The first step is: can you find someone who will listen without judgement? Notice how this feels— if you can’t, record yourself speaking. Listen to your recording and listen. Can you listen without judging yourself? Can you sit with the discomfort and still listen deeply?

This is how you heal- by listening to yourself. Want to give it a try and let us know how it goes?

Regulation is the boring stuff: sleep hygiene, regular routines, consistency and persistency in actions, being in nature, getting the steps in.

Healing starts with regulation- attunement is key. :)

From

One of the most pervasive experiences of unresolved trauma is self-disconnect. It feels as though we have no ground or anchor within ourselves. Almost everything/or a lot, is sourced from the outside, particularly our sense of emotional safety, validation and our sense of self. Unresolved trauma is a felt experience where we operate in life with no or little foundation: of safety, embodiment and boundaries, of agency, of needs meeting and desires, of authentic expression. Living in this way for too long rewires our biology for survival. It pushes the system into control, inflammation and fear. Inhabiting our body becomes the experience our system most wants to escape from. So it makes sense why it’s so scary when we re-engage the body and the protections. PRACTICE SLOW DOWN, the pace of your life and the pace of your healing. The more you rush through life and healing, the more pressure the nervous system feels and the less capacity to receive, heal and integrate. Unresolved trauma comes with a sense of urgency to do something and change quickly. By slowing down, you make more space, see things clearer, engage your environment more, feel more, observe more and build the capacity to make choices less from that urgency and controlling state.
