Speaking up when you see or hear something that something that isn’t right, because, for many people, silence means consent.
In nursing school, I remember learning the term “implied consent”. I remember asking my teacher “but, if the patient doesn’t know all their choices, how could they make an educated decision?”. It was a genuine and innocent question.... I wasn’t trying to throw her off or come across as being argumentative, I really wanted to know. I remember her struggling to answer my simple question and in the end, I don’t think she ever did actually answer the question. It ended up with something generic like “well, we do the best we can to make sure they understand...”
I didn’t realize it then, but I was already on the path to becoming a doula! Informing people and helping them navigate the confusing journey through pregnancy, labor and postpartum is what fuels me.
