Hi ya’ll. I am Samantha, aka Sam, the one behind SOL Ayurveda. Many clients are curious to know how I found my calling in the healing arts, namely bodywork therapies, yoga and āyurvedic medicine. So here is a little more of my story if you are interested…

I grew up in the Midwest where I had a transformative experience when I was twenty years old on my college campus.

Through a series of magical omens I heeded the call and pivoted my life from a depressed party goer to a traveler, seeker, and student of the Vedic tradition. That was fifteen years ago!

At first I started as a yogic “philosophy” seeker and āsana student. I spent time in India studying the Bhagavad Gita and other Bhakti śāstra (scriptures). Shortly after I came back to the states and received a yoga certification from Kripalu. After that I traveled and spent time in Thailand studying thai massage at ITM, Sunshine Massage School and with Master Sin Chai.

Somehow I ended up in San Francisco in 2011 with whatever I owned stuffed in my car and I never left! ((wild story for another time))

I continued my studies in bodywork here, in San Francisco, through the San Francisco School of Massage and become a certified massage therapist. I also continued yoga studies specifically in Therapeutic Yoga through Yoga Tree SF, where I also worked for some time.

I realized there was something missing from my practice of yoga and bodywork, I needed to gain more wisdom around healing the body. I decided to start studying āyurveda in 2015 at The California College of Ayurveda and become a certified āyurvedic health counselor.

As you can tell, I love learning things! And I have dedicate my life to the vastness and limitless vision that the Vedic tradition offers. For the last three+ years I have been in deep study with my teacher Kaya Mindlin () and scratching the surface at Jyotisha (Vedic astrology) with Steven Highburger.

I have so much gratitude to the teachers who have been intricate puzzle pieces for my own self development and thus my own ability to be of service in the world.

Happy to share more about myself, just ask 💜

Hi ya’ll, I am listening to your requests and heeding the call - let’s do this thing! Weekly classes start THIS Thursday 2/8 at 10am PT in-person at SOL Ayurveda studio in the Outer Sunset of San Francisco.

Previously you had to sign up for a whole series, now it will be a drop in style, so you can take as many or as little classes at you want through the month.

Here’s a little more about what to expect in these classes….

Join a weekly therapeutic restorative class led by Sam. Classes are inspired by Supreme Release Yoga (SRY) which focuses on decompressing the spine and releasing deep tension in the pelvis. You will leave feeling rejuvenated with a deep sense of inner tranquility.

Each class is $35 drop in. The space is very limited (4 people per class) which allows me to give individual attention to each of you. Expect a 60-75min class. All props provided, no mats needed, just wear comfortable unrestrictive clothing.

Each month we will have a theme. This month we will explore IMMUNITY from the yogic and āyurvedic perspective. You can expect gentle heart opening āsana and prānāyāma practices that nourish the seat of ojas, our container for immunity.

On this auspicious full moon I have a gift for you! I recorded this last night as the moon was rising.

🌝 COMMENT or DM and I will send you the link 🌝

A little more about this particular full moon and Vedic astrology (jyotisha)…

The traditional zodiac signs are divided up into various segments in the Vedic tradition and these deeper segments are called nakshatras. These nakshatras give us rich meanings to pull from. In particular we look at the full moon and its nakshatra to guide us into a kind of prediction, and help us center our intentions for the month to come.
The full moon currently sits in Pushya Nakshatra which is within the sign of Cancer. Pushya means “nourishing” and this Nakshatra is considered to be the most auspicious of the 27 Nakshatras. This means the moon is signaling a time to contemplate and set intentions toward deep nourishment. When new intentions and actions are started on this day, it is said that blessings are sure to come.  This is especially the case for spiritual seekers, where committing or recommitting to a spiritual practice today becomes like a little boost from the cosmos that helps you sustain your path.

A contemplation for this time (the moon will stay in this position until later this evening):

* What in your life needs nourishing?
* What have you sacrificed in yourself that limits your expansiveness to grow and blossom?
* What can you let go of in order to create space for more restoration in your life?

🌝 If you can practice today, that is ideal, however know that this can be practiced anytime you need some healing and restoration, not just on the full moon 🌝

With love,
Sam

Are you interested in extending the time in between your massage and bodywork sessions? The SRY practice has been my secret to keeping my spine free from tension and pain. Not only has it helped me (and many others I know and work with) in the physical realms but it also targets deeper, into the more subtle realms by quieting the mind and creating a sweet space where you can actually connect deeply within, to your Self.

The practice is restorative, so there is not effort involved, but it is very DEEP in the sense that it targets deep muscles in the spine and pelvis that have been gripping and holding for a long time. These places are usually bypassed in traditional “stretching” that targets larger superficial muscle groups and uses much effort and extreme angles to force a stretch to happen. The reality is, when we force things to “open” they remain locked down, and grip tighter. The secret is to release effort and hold your body in appropriate angles in order to target deep held places to release.

This series is all on ZOOM. And the practicing will be shorter - around 45 minutes long- in order to encourage you to develop a consistent home practice.

I hope you can join! Link in the bio to sign up. DM or email for questions samantha@solayurveda.com

Om gam ganapataye namah 🙏🏼

The remover of obstacles. The protector of doorways. The seer amongst seers. The Lord of categories. You who is stable, fixed, the earth element. May my mind be fixed, clear and stable. May the doorways be open that need to be and may the ones that must be shut, close! Happy Ganesha Caturthi- the 4th day of the waxing moon in this month of Bhadrapada. A time to celebrate Ganesha, and all his meanings.

With keeping in the theme of this time - namely pacifying vata dosha -Ganesha is representative of the earth element. One way to think about honoring him is through balancing and stabilizing routines.

Here is our little Ganesha that my daughter picked out at our farmers market a little while ago. He sits on our home altar now where we offer him sweets and mantras in the morning. The next slide is the Ganapati who resides over my office where I teach and see clients. You may have noticed him while receiving sessions 🌹❤️

Have you ever noticed when you feel scared, nervous, afraid that your body grips in response? Our bodies hold patterns according to the ways they habituate - meaning the body mirrors our internal environment. So how do we break these patterns that are no longer serving us? I am so excited to offer this series and bring together connections between the psoas, vata dosha, and holding fear in the body. There is very limited availability and an early bird pricing for in-person option that ends 8/23. If you can not make the in-person class but are interested in a ZOOM option, please direct message me and I will send you the link. All classes are recorded and uploaded to our portal the following day to encourage you to practice through the week and when it fits into your schedule. Any questions please feel free to ask 💜

This is one of those questions I think many people do not ask because they feel like they “should know.” If you ever asked yourself this question or are curious, you are not alone. Here are a few tips to help you:

✨cultivate your internal awareness by focusing inward to where you feel the pressure in your body. Now, release any tension or gripping around the areas you feel being worked on by the practitioner. You might notice other areas release in sync. Remember the point of bodywork (in my opinion) is to release tension in the body. If your body is gripping around pressure it may be too much pressure or the technique needs adjusting. We are going for releasing, opening, softening tissue, not adding another layer of gripping and tension on top of already tense muscles.

✨notice your breath. Your breath should be easeful without effort. If you notice upper chest breathing or holding the breath most likely your body is also gripping as a response. Try evening out your breath, or making exhales a bit longer while focusing on bringing the breath into the lower lobes of your lungs. Relax any effort around breathing. You might notice as you relax more your breathing actually becomes shallower and subtler (not deeper). This is normal and what the body naturally does in deep states of rest.

✨speak up when: the pressure, the technique, or some other factor (temperature, position of table, etc.) is obstructing you from going into a relaxed internal space.

✨drift off. There is a deep healing your body attains from being in that space where you are not quite asleep and not quite awake. It’s ok to drift off and simply do nothing in your session. If you fall asleep that is perfectly ok!

💜 most sessions are in silence in order to encourage you in cultivating a relationship with your own internal awareness. However, there are circumstances where silence may actually make you feel more uneasy and add to the tension in your body. In these cases I encourage you to talk in your session. We always have an intake before any session to see what’s showing up for you, so I can help you navigate the right environment for you, that day.

*NEW* Yoga Classes are FINALLY happening! I have been talking about getting back to offering in-person classes for at least a year- if not longer- and it’s actually happening ya’ll!

This kicks oft the first seasonal series ((next one will be summer 2023)). All classes are deeply inspired by Supreme Release Yoga (SRY) and will include therapeutic āsana, prānāyāma, āyurveda, and some jyotish (Vedic astrology) sprinkled in.

In this series, Softening Into Spring, we will specifically explore the relationship between the heart, ((the seat of kapha dosha)) and the spine. In order to effectively nourish and open the heart space, we need a soft spine free of stagnation, allowing prāna to flow unobstructed.
Space is very limited so sign up while there is still a spot! Link in bio 💜

I feel so grateful to be able to do something I truly love for work. For this next year I will be refining some of my offerings and ((hopefully)) coming back to teaching some therapeutic Yoga and Ayurveda courses again, very soon. 💜

I mixed this up for years, thinking my low energy was simply because I needed to do more: work out more, get up earlier, overcome the fatigue. Surely that was because I was lazy. When I started studying Ayurveda my first teacher, Dr. Ram, asked this question: are you lethargic or exhausted? It was an epiphany for me. I wasn’t lazy, I was tired. The culture we live in sends so many messages confusing these too concepts.
According to Ayurveda, in a simplified way, when kapha dosha is in excess (water and earth elements) there’s enough energy to move but there is a stagnancy to do the work.
The key here: there’s enough energy and stamina but not a willingness to get moving. In exhaustion, vata dosha is vitiated (air and ether elements). The body is tired, there is little to low energy to be used on extra tasks like movement. For the most part, the majority of my clients and myself are more vata vitiated - they do not have the proper energy reserved to continue to power through. Most of us are over worked and burned out. For true Kapha vitiation, a workout routine and a cleanse may be medicine, but for the vitatied vata, the vigorous movement and detox’s only lead to further depletion and burn out. For the record, weight is only one aspect of kapha dosha and is NOT the indicator of lazy or exhausted. Excess exhaustion over long periods of time can lead the body to gain more weight (think cortisol and stress hormones - the weight is a defense mechanism).
As things start reopening there’s a push from the toxic wellness world to detox, lose weight, do a workout challenge. Ask yourself, what is my energy level? Am I actually lazy and lethargic, or am I exhausted? Rest and restorative practices are the way to get back to yourself. Some ideas: yoga nidra, spending time in nature, and slow/ restorative breath centered yoga asana. Or just take a nap instead of drinking that afternoon cup of coffee.
Permission to rest now 💜

Ayurveda has a lot of rules around food and eating. Don’t eat these foods together, only eat at these times, only eat this much, etc..
But when do all these rules and guides start becoming less of a help and more of a form of disordered eating? The purpose of the guides is to help balance our digestion to we can focus the mind for realizing our true nature as spirit, beyond the body. If we are caught up in rules and guides, are we making the space to listen to our bodies or are we controlling our food because we think it’s healthy? And when does eating and living to be “healthy” become a problem (look up orthorexia)? When we solely focus so much attention on the rules or what the wellness industry has told us is “healthy” we can forget our own body’s intuition and language. My advice: avoid putting foods in restriction zones or labeling them off limits/ good and bad. When we restrict and put things off limits because the are not “healthy” or “balancing” shame and guilt can come when we naturally crave those foods, or are in situations like holidays, where those foods are on the menu. It’s ok to feel cravings, and it’s ok to eat foods that you have previously classified as “unhealthy” in your mind (actually it can be therapeutic!)

Start examining why you believe certain foods are unhealthy and if the restriction is serving you? Your body is communicating to you, Ayurveda (and Yoga) also have tools to help you start listening to what your body is saying beyond just following rules and regulations. This is why working with someone who is a certified (and no not a 100 hour certification) Ayurvedic Health Counselor or better a Doctor of Ayurveda is so valuable. There is no one right rule or guide for every body. Sometimes breaking the rules is the best medicine to start getting you back in tune with yourself.
