There is a tribe in Africa where the birth date of a child is counted not from when they were born, nor from when they are conceived but from the day that the child was a thought in its mother’s mind.

And when a woman decides that she will have a child, she goes off and sits under a tree, by herself, and she listens until she can hear the song of the child that wants to come.

And after she’s heard the song of this child, she comes back to the man who will be the child’s father, and teaches it to him. And then, when they make love to physically conceive the child, some of that time they sing the song of the child, as a way to invite it.

And then, when the mother is pregnant, the mother teaches that child’s song to the midwives and the old women of the village, so that when the child is born, the old women and the people around her sing the child’s song to welcome it.

And then, as the child grows up, the other villagers are taught the child’s song. If the child falls, or hurts its knee, someone picks it up and sings its song to it. Or perhaps the child does something wonderful, or goes through the rites of puberty, then as a way of honoring this person, the people of the village sing his or her song.

Women often ask me ‘How the f**k will I push a baby out of my body? Like seriously... HOW?’ Well, let me tell ya, it’s got nothing to do with your due date or the hospital induction policy.

These details mean jack in birth. Because, my amazing friend, you are born to f**king birth. You will literally birth with EVERY fiber of your being. Every cell. Every synapse. Every muscle. Every heart beat.

You will call on the strength of the woman who have birthed before you. The strength of your mother, your grandmother, your great-grandmother, and her mother before her. You will call in their energy when you need it most.

You will draw on every time you were told ‘No’, and you will roar ‘YEESSS!’. You will be so deep in your zone that you will be unstoppable. A fireball of power and purpose.

And when your baby is out on your chest, you will first-pump the air and say ‘I did it. I f**king did it!’.

And you will lie back and wonder why we don’t talk about birth in exultant powerful terms. Because we should. We should inspire the next generation of birthing women to trust in their birthing bodies. We should rave about our ability to birth new life.

Because we seriously f**king rock.

Friday is the last day for bills to be voted on in the California Senate before they head to the Assembly. Please take a few minutes to call your state Senator today (find your senator's phone number here and look up your senator here) and ask for an "amendment to SB 806 Roth, to create a Licensed Midwife Board in the Medical Board of California’s Sunset Review bill."

That’s it! Even if you’ve called before, call again—now more than ever, our voices in support of midwifery need to be loud and clear.

Why? Because just in this past week alone, we’ve seen that when the medical lobby calls, legislators listen. When the California Medical Association asked them to reduce the proposed increase in physician licensing fees, their request was granted. Pronto.

When midwifery supporters ask for the fundamental right to self-determination under a Licensed Midwife Board, which every other healthcare profession in the state has—and which is budget-neutral—what do we get? Crickets.

So yes, we need to make our voices louder. Call today! (look up your sentaor here)
