Let’s talk about KEYGUARDS! A keyguard is a plastic grid placed over the screen of an AAC device, providing a physical barrier between buttons. They are extremely helpful for users who have fine motor difficulties or trouble selecting individual buttons. Each keyguard is customized to fit the user’s AAC app/system, as well as their grid size. The ones in these pictures were ordered online from Keyguard Assistive Technology, but we’re hearing more and more about SLPs who are 3D printing their own! Questions about keyguards? “I can’t make progress with them in speech because they’re not able to stay in their seat.”
Spoiler Alert!🚨 Sitting in a chair isn’t a requirement for communication. Child-led speech therapy is all about doing whatever your students want to do - wherever they want to do it! Whether it’s walking around the room or lying on the floor, remember that language can happen anywhere and everywhere.

We see this happen quite a bit - SLPs and educators who edit the home page of an AAC device, in an effort to make it more “accessible” and “easier” to navigate for the AAC user.

As good as these intentions might be, this is a short-term fix that will lead to larger issues:
1. The most frequently used words in spoken language are on the home page - and for a reason! When you edit the home page, you take away a child’s access to those core words.
2. Apps like TouchChat are organized by Fitzgerald Key (pronouns are yellow, verbs are green, etc.), with the idea of producing phrases by making selections from left to right of the screen. LAMP WFL’s organization is based on the Unity system. Overall, there is research behind each button on the home page and where it is located. Editing the home page ruins the motor plan and organization of the app.
3. Icons/buttons on the home page are programmed to “jump” to the next layer or predicted page. Editing the home page breaks those links and navigational programming.
