Protestors point to scientific studies that show the medicinal benefits of ma*****na on patients suffering from chronic pain
Medical ma*****na patients want to see the DEA chief go up in smoke. After agency head Chuck Rosenberg called medical ma*****na “a joke” during a Q&A with reporters last week, over 10,000 people have signed a petition on change.org demanding his resignation.
“What really bothers me is the notion that ma*****na is also medicinal because it’s not,” Rosenberg said, according to CBS.

The Senate today passed the FY2016 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (MilCon-VA) Appropriations Bill, which includes language to allow Veterans Administration (VA) doctors to recommend medical ma*****na to their patients in states where medical ma*****na is legal. The language was included as an amendment in the Senate Appropriations committee in May.
“Veterans in medical ma*****na states should be treated the same as any other resident, and should be able to discuss ma*****na with their doctor,” said Michael Collins, deputy director of national affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance.

Smoking Pot Could Relieve Severe Morning Sickness, Some Doctors Say
By Alternet
Morning sickness is the leading cause of hospitalization in early pregnancy. Ma*****na appears to help.
Medical ma*****na may be an untapped source of relief for pregnant women suffering from severe morning sickness.
On its own, ma*****na uses remains heavily debated: The Daily Beast cited that 23 states so far have "recognized ma*****na for its medical benefit" and allow it to be legally prescribed, while other states are only recently considering the idea of legalization. But even in states where it's legal, The Daily Beast has found that many physicians still refuse to sign off on medical licenses for pregnant women.

If Cannabis Can Kill "Incurable" Brain Cancer, Why Is It Criminalized?
By GreenMedinfo
Cannabis contains a compound that may kill brain cancers that chemotherapy and radiation can't touch, so why isn't it being used today?
In recent years, we've focused heavily on educating our readers about the still relatively unknown role that cancer stem cells play in cancer, both in terms of conventional cancer treatment failure and the exceptionally promising role that natural interventions play in targeting these highly malignant cells.
It is encouraging to witness a growing awareness that cancer has been completely misunderstood, and that in order to make progress against the global epidemic we will have to go back to the wisdom of the ancients by using foods and spices instead of toxic chemicals and radiation to fight a disease that should be classified more as a survival mechanism unmasked than an inexorably lethal, genetically-driven condition.

Ohioans reject legalizing ma*****na
By The Columbus Dispatch
Ohioans pushed a monopoly ma*****na-legalization proposal out the door Tuesday by a nearly 2-to-1 vote.
But the question is, will pot make a comeback?

Medical Ma*****na & Addiction Recovery
By Bangor Daily News
One of the downsides of being a clinician is that people will often relate to you as an expert on morality. They will ask, “Is it ok if I…” or “Is it wrong of me to…”
I think of Rumi, ““Beyond our ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
I’d much sooner consider what is healthy and unhealthy than be concerned with morals, ethics, or law. I’m not opposed to those things, I’d just rather find what works for a person without judgment, or undue limitations like my personal prejudices.
I have always known that there are countless roads to recovery but somehow in my past I saw fit to judge some of them. In the past I have been publicly critical about using Methadone as op**te replacement therapy. Then I sat with a number of folks who helped me to understand that they’d have died without it. It occurred to me that unlike he**in, no one has ever gotten a bad dose of op**te replacement drugs.

Move Over Big Pharma Amphetamines — Cannabis Successfully Treats ADHD in Clinical Trials
By Alternet
Prior to this study, there had been minimal clinical data on the subject, despite widespread anecdotal reports of relief from those suffering from ADHD.
At an international symposium on cannabinoid therapeutics last month, researchers presented clinical data indicating that the use of herbal cannabis relieves symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults.
German researchers selected 30 patients whose condition had proven resistant to conventional drug therapies, to study and evaluate the effects of cannabis on their ADHD symptoms.

Sanders proposes nixing ma*****na from federal list of dangerous drugs
By The Washington Post
Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders announced his support Wednesday for removing ma*****na from a list of the most dangerous drugs outlawed by the federal government — a move that would free states to legalize it without impediments from Washington.
The self-described “democratic socialist” senator from Vermont shared his proposal during a nearly two-hour town hall meeting with college students that he said was broadcast on the Internet to about 300 campuses across the country from George Mason University in Fairfax County, Va.
“Too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of ma*****na use,” Sanders told a live audience of more than 1,700 students, which erupted with applause. “That’s wrong. That has got to change.”

The Next President Must End the War on Cannabis
By Cannabis Now
When the latest round of Democratic presidential candidates stepped out on to the stage in Nevada to give the American people a first-ever televised meet-and-greet with the political figures marred with certifiable delusions of changing the United States for the better, it was apparent from the beginning that the event had been secretly billed “The Hillary Clinton and the Bernie Sanders Show.” With the former First Lady positioned directly in the middle of a zoo of unpredictable political animals, the initial tone of the so-called debate suggested that at least one of the well-dressed snarling dogs would be eaten alive in front of millions of viewers before CNN had a chance to cut to commercial.
Although the debate never really ever entered the realm of bare-knuckle violence that the majority of the nation tuned in to see, there was a great deal of excitement resonating throughout the cannabis class when moderator Anderson Cooper revealed, before taking a short break, that the candidates would be forced to answer a question on the issue of ma*****na reform. Unfortunately, this portion of the debate was not quite the interrogation that some of us would have liked.

Can medical ma*****na be the future replacement for commonly used blood pressure medicine? ~ Remarkably, the physiology behind the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is generally not covered in medical school programs. ~ Today’s ma*****na is notably much stronger, and therefore, the unspoken corollary implies, somehow more dangerous.
How Ma*****na Reduces Blood Pressure
By Medical Ma*****na Exchange
Introduction to the Study:
Can ma*****na be the future replacement for commonly used blood pressure medicine? For nearly twenty years, researchers and their work have suggested that endocannabinoids have a strong effect on blood vessels, causing vasodilation (blood vessel widening) and reducing blood pressure. But the work hasn’t been refined. Up until recent, the isolation of which endocannabinoids and receptors involved in this process was unknown.
That’s what Christopher Stanley and his team at the University Of Nottingham School Of Medicine sought to discover. In the study, they activated cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, along with transient receptor potential vanilloid one (TRPV1), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARᵧ) and the novel endothelial cannabinoid receptor (CBᶒ). It was found that, out of all the receptors involved in blood vessel constriction/activation, activation of CB1 receptors on endothelial (blood vessel) tissue helped to reduce stress on vessels that were constricted; this is what happens when vessels dilate and blood pressure reduces.

Closing the Medical Cannabis Education Gap
By Cannabis Now
The battle over the legalization of medical cannabis is slowly being won state-by-state. Currently, 23 states and the District of Columbia leading the way and an additional 15 states have passed “CBD-only” medical ma*****na bills.
As legalization marches on, patients and caregivers across the country are seeking out more information about the benefits of using medical cannabis for everything from pain management and cancer to pediatric seizures and neurologic disorders. But unfortunately, many doctors to whom these patients turn for advice, insight and guidance on potential treatment regimens simply don’t have the answers or understanding about the science behind medical cannabis.
Remarkably, the physiology behind the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is generally not covered in medical school programs.

Today's W**d Really Is Not 'Your Father's Ma*****na'
By Alternet
One of the favorite claims of opponents of ma*****na legalization is that pot today "is not your father's ma*****na"—it is instead much stronger, and therefore, the unspoken corollary implies, somehow more dangerous. It increasingly looks like those folks are correct about pot being stronger, but off the mark when it comes to it being riskier.
As someone who has been smoking the stuff since 1969, my personal opinion is, well, duh! I remember all too well the Mexican brick w**d from back in the day and the relatively crappy high it produced. I also remember being exposed to stronger w**d, even way back then.

The Outrage of Medical Pot Users Denied Organ Transplants
By Alternet
Patients in California, Oregon, and Washington, and other medical ma*****na states have infamously and routinely been denied life-saving organ transplants solely because they use the plant. The given basis for denial of a spot on the national organ transplant list is that medical ma*****na patients are substance abusers.
That reasoning fails to distinguish between ma*****na as a recreational drug and medical ma*****na legally used for medicinal purposes under the supervision of a doctor, and the commonplace practice predates the advent of medical ma*****na, reflecting old biases and ignoring more recent research on ma*****na's safety and efficacy.

Major victory for ma*****na dispensary in federal court
By SF Gate
Lawful medical cannabis operators across America scored a major victory in federal court today.
United Stated District Judge Charles R. Breyer ordered the lifting of an injunction against one of California’s oldest lawful dispensaries, the Marin Alliance for Medical Ma*****na.
Judge Breyer ruled that newly enacted Congressional law — the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment — prevents the government from prosecuting the Fairfax-based Marin Alliance for Medical Ma*****na, and its founder Lynette Shaw.
The ruling in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California will have far-reaching legal impact, attorneys say.
The medical cannabis industry in California and beyond has faced a federal crackdown since 2011. Major dispensaries Harborside Health Center and Berkeley Patients Group both face pending federal forfeiture actions.

Ending the U.S. government’s war on medical ma*****na research
By Brookings
Of all the controlled substances that the federal government regulates, cannabis is treated in unique ways that impede research. Specifically, the U.S. government has held back the medical community's ability to conduct the type of research that the scientific community considers the experimental gold standard in guiding medical practice. Thus, the use of cannabis for medical treatment is happening in states based largely on anecdotal or limited science. In many cases, patients and doctors operate according to a learn-as-you-go approach—a situation that is inexcusably the fault of federal policies failing to keep pace with changing societal views and state-level legal landscapes.

Many States Still Grapple With Regulating Medical Ma*****na

How the State’s New Medical Ma*****na Laws Affect San Jose
By San Jose Inside
Two decades after California sanctioned ma*****na as medicine and a year out from possibly outright legalization, Gov. Jerry Brown approved a plan Friday to regulate the world’s largest cannabis industry.
Spurred by the threat of a ballot initiative to make California the fifth state allowing general adult use, the Legislature introduced a trio of bills endorsed by law enforcement, the cannabis industry, labor unions and local governments. The triple-joined AB 243, AB 266 and SB 643—if one passed, they all passed—marked the first time state lawmakers effectuated a pot policy since SB 420 in 2003 let patients and caregivers form collectives.
The sweeping package signed into law just before Sunday’s deadline will transform California’s billion-dollar medical pot sector with a complex multi-agency system of testing and licensing.

Canadian Researchers: Use Medical Ma*****na Instead Of Opioids For Neuropathic Pain
By The W**d Blog
Using opiods for pain is a hard thing for many people. Sure, the painkillers provide temporary relief from pain, but the side effects can be horrific. They tear up your organs, and often times lead to a level of addiction that ruins lives. If only there was another medicine out there that was effective that didn’t come with all of the problems…You see where I’m going with this. Medical ma*****na is a proven form of treatment for pain, specifically neuropathic pain.
Recently researchers in Canada started pushing for Canadian doctors to substitute opioid based painkillers for medical ma*****na. Per The Globe and Mail: “Canadian doctors should use medical ma*****na instead of frequently abused opioids to treat patients with neuropathic pain and a host of other conditions cannabis has been proven to combat, Vancouver-based HIV/AIDS researchers argue in a newly published editorial….”

Florida Lawmakers Believe Medical Ma*****na Should Only Be Given to the Terminally Ill
By High Times
Florida patients might be doomed if the state’s medical ma*****na program continues to be hashed out by the suits in Tallahassee. Earlier last week, a couple of influential lawmakers submitted a bill to the state’s House of Representatives, which aims to provide only those patients considered “terminally ill” with access to cannabis. This ultra-restrictive proposal was apparently designed to ensure Florida’s walking dead has medicine effective in easing the pain associated with the end of life, while continuing to discount those patients that still reside among the living.
Although not a single patient has yet to benefit from the state’s 2014 Charlotte’s Web law, which allows specific patients suffering from seizure disorders to obtain the non-intoxicating strain, the bill’s authors — Senators Rob Bradley and Matt Gaetz — believe their latest proposal would compliment the current program by providing dying patients with an alternative to dangerous prescription drugs.

Medical ma*****na is a political issue. It is a legal issue. But most important, it is a health issue that is playing an increasingly significant role in the quality of life for Americans, especially veterans.
Let’s start with the facts. There are approximately 2.7 million American veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and according to the Department of Veterans Affairs, upward of 20% of these veterans experience post-traumatic stress or depression. Between 2000 and 2014, over 300,000 service members were diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.

10 Ways California’s First Medical Cannabis Legal Framework Will Impact the Industry
By Leafly
As sunset fell on the drought-stricken, smoke-filled state of California on the auspicious date of 9/11/15, its legislature was busy amending and tweaking three bills that could provide the state with the framework for regulating medical cannabis. In what the legislature hailed as “the three legs of the stool,” Assembly Bill 243, Assembly Bill 266, and Senate Bill 643 were passed just short of midnight, sending cannabis businesses and representatives scurrying for the latest text.
While the ramifications of the law change will continue to play out in the coming years, what is certain is that California businesses have to quickly work out what the changes mean to them, and what new licenses they need to seek. What is also clear is that local government will retain control of land use decisions (and the right to say “no”).
