We are so proud of Gerardo, one of our interns! Here's his inspirational story that Jennifer wrote to Frank Somerville and was shared on his page! Way to go Gerardo! https://www.facebook.com/FrankSomervilleKTVU/posts/1088324481230878:0
“By all accounts he should have been dead 10 years ago.”
That’s what Jennifer Schachner told me about the person in this picture.
His name is Gerardo Garary.
And he was in a horrible accident 10 years ago.
But this is one of those stories about the human spirit.
And how strong it is.
Jennifer is a lecturer at San Jose State.
She met Gerardo in the Kinesiology Department.
He also trains in one of her Taekwondo classes.
She says meeting Gerardo changed her life.
And she felt compelled to share his story with me.
Here's what she wrote:
On a trip to Las Vegas, Gerardo's friend fell asleep at the wheel and he was ejected; landing on his head going approximately 60 miles per hour.
He was in a coma for months and when he awoke, he was told he would never walk again, never speak again and certainly never go back to school.
His story should have ended so many times, but it didn’t!
He got out of his wheelchair, he speaks well and he is set to graduate in a year from SJSU.
When you talk with him he will tell you that he is an exception.
People do not survive the injuries he had.
While his does have some memory issues along with challenges on the one side of his body, he NEVER lets that stop him.
He no longer uses a wheelchair or a cane and is taking full loads of classes because he wants to graduate do badly.
He wants to give back to the community and help people who are struggling in life.
Everyday he could have an excuse to give up and given in, but he doesn’t.
In fact, he is one of the most positive people I know and inspires me everyday.
I looked at this photo and I could not let one more day go by without sharing this with you.
Gerardo is one of the best examples of a pure heart and fiery soul who doesn’t let anything get in his way!
I hope this photo inspires you as much as it inspires me!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this :)
---Jenifer Schachner
I like these kinds of stories.
They remind of what’s possible.
They remind to keep on fighting.
They remind me to never give up.
They remind me that the human spirit is a lot stronger than most of us realize.
Here is a friendly reminder to mark your calendars for the Elder Summit at El Camino Hospital this coming June! :)
