Infant Enhancement Center of San Luis Obispo

Infant Enhancement Center of San Luis Obispo We are an educational and clinical organization offering parents and parents-to-be cutting edge information on infant socio-emotional development.

Joseph Turner, Psy.D. We are developmental psychologists offering objective information regarding cutting edge research in the realms of infant mental health, developmental psychology, medicine, neuroscience, and attachment theory for parents, parents-to-be, and professionals in the field. We are interested in bridging the gap between the worlds of scientific research and parenting with the aim of delivering research findings in a practical and applicable manner. We hope that we can help parents and parents-to-be learn about the experience of pregnancy (for the developing fetus, mother, and father or partner), the critical importance of early interactions between infant and mother (and other caregivers) on early brain development, and overall become familiar with developmental milestones and the general developmental trajectory that all humans experience throughout their childhood. Our belief is that the prenatal period and the first year of life essentially sets the tone for the developmental lifespan. To that end, we hope to advocate for healthy and informed pregnancies, confident and emotionally flexible infants, and strong and compassionate parents and caregivers.

Matching baby’s lulls by patiently waiting, and then engaging when she does, is a hallmark of responsive, sensitive parenting. You’re attuned to baby, aware of baby’s cues, and quick to respond to baby’s cues. Sensitive parenting helps baby form a trusting relationship with you, called “secure attachment.” http://www.zerotofive.net/parenting/reading-your-newborns-engage-with-me-cues/

Baby loves it when you mimic her facial expressions, coo at her little sounds, and gaze into her eyes. Other times, she needs a break.

Have you worried that your newborn fell asleep hungry after breastfeeding? 🤱🏿🤱🏻🤱🏼
"When a baby is hungry, he tends to clench his fists tightly and bring them toward his face. If he falls asleep hungry, his fists usually stay clenched. But when he gets milk, he relaxes starting with his face. Then his shoulders relax, and finally those fists unclench. Eventually they're as limp as the rest of him. Think of his hands as a built-in fuel gauge." -- La Leche League's Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, 8th edition

There are exceptions to every rule and this is only one tool in your toolbox. This rule should be used for healthy, full-term newborns. If your newborn is listless and difficult to wake, consulting with your healthcare provider to rule out extenuating circumstances is recommended.

Many parents are uncomfortable when their kids experience "negative" emotions, and feel the desire to bring them back to happiness.

Instead of rescuing your child from their difficult emotions, try this.

It's hard to see our kids sad, frustrated or discouraged. Instead of rushing to rescue them, let your children feel their feelings using these positive parenting tips!

We cannot teach children to be respectful by treating them with disrespect. How we treat them is what we teach them.
