Celebrating Black History

This Black History Month, the City of Champaign celebrates the legacy of Shirley Chisholm, a trailblazing leader in American politics. In 1968, she became the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress, where she served seven terms representing New York and championed racial and gender equality, education, and economic justice.

Chisholm made history again in 1972 as the first Black person and the first woman to seek the presidential nomination of a major U.S. political party, running under the slogan “Unbought and Unbossed.” Throughout her career, she worked to expand opportunities for all Americans and continues to inspire future generations of leaders through her courage, service, and advocacy.
