Understanding Sleep Science
Using a schedule instead of wake windows after 4/5 months
✨ Bio Rhythm Times
There are times during the day our bodies are best ready for sleep. When sleep happens during these times, sleep happens more easily, is more restorative, and can make for a more predictable schedule. This is why sleep schedules centered around bio times tend to work better than following wake windows.
✨ Circadian Rhythm
Starting at 4 months of age (adjusted after the due date), circadian rhythms start to develop. These are natural fluctuations and changes in the body including metabolism, body temperature, digestion, hormones, and more. This rhythm runs on a 24-25 hour cycle and is influenced by what we do- eating, sleeping, and the sun, among other factors.
✨ Sleep Pressure
As we stay awake, the body releases a chemical message, adenosine, which promotes the sleep drive or need for sleep. The longer a person is awake, the stronger the sleep pressure becomes. When we sleep, adenosine is broken.down– and the sleep pressure is released.
✨ Sleep Sweet Spots
When taken together, sleep “sweet spots” emerge. When sleep happens during these times, sleep is more restorative and will help your little one become better rested. Always follow their sleepy cues to fine tune their sleep time within these sweet spot sleep windows.
