Runners: Listen Up🗣️

Rest isn’t always best for a lot of running injuries! Now that’s not a general statement across the board but the automatic response from doctors of “just stop running” shouldn’t be the norm🙅🏾‍♀️

When it comes to tendon and other soft tissue injuries (majority of running related injuries), you need to load the tissue in a controlled manner to see results. That’s why when you come back to running after a couple weeks off, the pain comes back too🙃

😊Share this with any runner you know that deals with on and off again pain on their runs

Do I have a bone stress injury (BSI)?🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

While there are classic signs of BSIs that can be identified, the best way to confirm this diagnosis is through an MRI. However, advanced imaging may not be feasible or accessible for everyone!💰

Clinical assessments can sometimes correctly identify the presence of a BSI and might be used to initiate a conservative rehab & management plan for the suspected injury, even without imaging🩻

It is important to see a medical provider in order to take the right steps towards recovery👩🏾‍⚕️👩🏾‍⚕️

Load Em Up🏋🏾‍♀️

Isometric exercises (holding a position for a prolonged period of time) are a great start to introducing some load to the injured tendon! BUT the true bread and butter of tendon rehab is eccentric strengthening!

🌟Single Leg Strength for Runners🌟

🔑Specificity is a key principle with any strength training program for an athlete. It means that you need to not only strengthen SPECIFIC MUSCLES but also strengthen them in SPECIFIC POSITIONS relevant to the SPECIFIC SPORT!

Runners will not get the strength gains that they need if they are only doing exercises lying down on a table! You need to get up and load your muscles in the single leg position to truly translate the strengthening to running💪🏾

This is a great exercise for runners to strengthen their gluteus medius, a major stabilizer when in the single leg stance phase with running. From here, you would want to gradually progress towards single leg exercises with heavier loads for even more benefit!🏋🏾‍♀️

❓❓❓

Plantar fasciitis is probably one of the most commonly self diagnosed injuries that I see amongst runners. They are not always wrong either! But pain in the foot or heel can be so many things🦶🏾

It’s important you see someone for a proper injury evaluation and get an individualized rehab plan so that you don’t develop a chronic injury!🙅🏾‍♀️

💡💡💡

Now this is not an excuse to skip a few days in your training plan just because🤦🏾‍♀️BUT if you do have to take a few days off for a small injury or illness, you don’t need to worry about it completely derailing your race day!

🔑Supplementing the time off from running with a form of cross training can be extremely helpful not only for the physical benefits, but also the mental component of feeling as though you’re still working towards your goal!

🔑Giving your body an extra day of rest sometimes if you aren’t feeling 100% might be just what you need!
