This is a remarkable achievement that could improve the quality of life for millions of people who suffer from speech impairments due to various conditions, such as stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, and more. One of my favorite things about my job is conducting Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS). An MBSS is a special x-ray that allows the Radiologist and the SLP to see how a person swallows different types of food and liquid mixed with barium. It is used to identify and treat swallowing disorders and problems with oral, pharyngeal, and upper esophageal function. It can help to determine the safety of oral intake and the best ways to swallow more easily and safely. An MBSS is a very useful tool for diagnosing and treating dysphagia, and I’m glad I can help my patients improve their quality of life with this procedure!

I just watched this inspiring video from the Parkinson's Voice Project. The video features some of their patients who have improved their speech and communication skills through the SPEAK OUT! program. They share how this program helped them strengthen their voice and speak with intent, and how The LOUD Crowd helped them maintain their progress and connect with others. I was moved by their courage and determination to overcome the challenges of Parkinson's.

I love using assistive technology in therapy! Many individuals experiencing difficulties with memory, organization, and planning can benefit from using apps on their smartphones. These apps can help people to be more efficient in completing their daily life activities and can be as simple as programming alarms and reminders to switch the laundry, take out the trash, feed their pets, etc.! There are great apps for working on to-do lists, grocery shopping, and managing projects, and schedules... There are so many options!! Don’t mess with your melon! 🍉

A concussion, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury ( mTBI) can result in injury to the head ( like a cut or bruise ) or may no create any visible injury. Sometimes, people may have a normal result on an MRI or CT head. However, that does not mean that there is no injury! It’s important to monitor for any changes in thinking skills such as headaches, brain fog, changes in sleep, trouble remembering things or finding words, etc.

When people experience challenges after a mTBI, an SLP can help!

Richardson, Texas — Parkinson Voice Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the voices of individuals with Parkinson’s, has named Clinical Speech Therapy PLLC as a recipient of its 2023 SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd Grant Program.

Grant recipients include hospitals, universities, private practices, and other speech therapy clinics across the United States and abroad. Each clinic receives speech therapy workbooks and free training for their speech-language pathologists and graduate students. Clinical Speech Therapy PLLC is committed to offering Parkinson Voice Project’s “SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd” program to their Parkinson’s community.

“Up to 90% of people with Parkinson’s are at risk of losing their ability to speak. In addition, swallowing complications account for 70% of the mortality rate in this patient population. Our vision at Parkinson Voice Project is to make quality speech therapy accessible to people with Parkinson’s worldwide,” said Samantha Elandary, Parkinson Voice Project Founder and Chief Executive Officer.

This grant program honors the late Daniel R. Boone, Ph.D., a world-renowned speech-language pathologist who recognized in the 1950s that individuals with Parkinson's could improve their communication by “speaking with intent." Parkinson Voice Project’s highly effective speech therapy program is based on Boone’s teachings and combines education for the patient and family, along with individual and group speech therapy.
