“Wait, but this other LC said to use heat for clogged ducts!” We hear it all the time and it wasn’t that long along that Kaitlyn was in an in-person class with professionals who had been in the field for decades who told everyone to never, ever use ice on the breasts. 🙈

Unfortunately that’s outdated advice but we work with clients all the time who are still being told this information. We know it gets confusing so we put this post together to break it down for you!

*NOTE: anytime heat is used, avoid excessive temperatures that may cause injury. Prolonged exposure to cold can also cause harm, including but not limited to ice packs applied directly onto the skin. If you have to power through the temperature, it’s too much.

Make sure to follow us at for part 2 on Heat vs Ice which will cover ni**le care!

🌿Why Protein Matters in Pregnancy🌿
Did you know that during pregnancy, your body’s need for protein increases by up to 25 grams per day? That’s because protein is the building block of every cell in your baby’s growing body, organs, skin, muscles, even the brain! 🧠👶

Protein also supports:
✨ Your expanding blood volume
✨ Growth of uterine and breast tissue
✨ Production of amniotic fluid and placenta

💡Quick Fact: The American Pregnancy Association recommends around 75–100 grams of protein per day during pregnancy, depending on your weight and trimester!

✅ Great sources include:

Eggs 🍳

Greek yogurt 🥣

Lean meats or legumes 🥩🫘

Quinoa or tofu 🍚

Eat up Momma! 🍜

🌸 The Beautiful Science of Breastfeeding 🤱✨

Why Nature’s First Nutrition Is Also Its Most Powerful

Breastfeeding isn’t just a bonding moment, it’s a biologically brilliant act of love. 💞 Backed by science and designed by nature, it's one of the most powerful ways to nurture, protect, and connect with your baby. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or looking for encouragement along the way, here are the scientifically proven benefits of breastfeeding for baby, mama, and the world we share.

👶 For Baby: The Ultimate Superfood

🍼 Tailored Nutrition
Breast milk is uniquely formulated for your baby. From birth to weaning, it adjusts to meet their changing nutritional needs—providing the perfect blend of fats, proteins, vitamins, and immune-boosting components. 🧬✨

🛡 Immunity Boost
Colostrum, the first milk produced after birth, is rich in antibodies that help build a strong immune system. Breastfed babies are less likely to experience:
🔹 Ear & respiratory infections
🔹 Stomach viruses & diarrhea
🔹 Allergies & eczema
🔹 Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

🧠 Brain Power
Studies from The Lancet and JAMA Pediatrics show that breastfeeding may support healthy brain development and improve cognitive outcomes, including higher IQ scores.

💪 Lifelong Protection
Breastfeeding may reduce a child’s risk of developing:
🍭 Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes
🌬 Asthma
⚖ Childhood obesity
🎗 Certain childhood cancers
💖 For Mama: Healing, Strength & Protection

🌿 Natural Recovery
Nursing encourages the uterus to contract, reduces postpartum bleeding, and burns extra calories, which can help with postpartum weight loss. 🧘‍♀️🔥

🎀 Reduced Cancer Risk
Women who breastfeed may have a lower risk of developing:
🔸 Breast cancer
🔸 Ovarian cancer
🔸 Heart disease & type 2 diabetes

🧘‍♀️ Emotional Harmony
Breastfeeding releases oxytocin, a hormone that reduces stress, enhances bonding, and supports emotional well-being. It’s also linked to a lower risk of postpartum depression. 💗
🌍 Bonus Benefits: For Your Wallet & the Planet

💰 Budget Friendly
Breast milk is 100% free. Families who breastfeed can save hundreds to thousands of dollars per year compared to formula feeding.

🌱 Earth-Loving Choice
Breastfeeding is environmentally sustainable: no packaging, no plastic waste, and no energy-intensive production. Just pure nourishment from you to your baby. 🌎💚

is a lactation consultant who has signed up to our scheme. Our charity funds, on a pay what you can afford basis, home visits to twin and triplet families needing breastfeeding support by an IBCLC. This story is a fabulous example of why we made this happen. To help us continue to provide this support, please make a donation

"This story is shared with permission.

A couple of months ago, a mum of twins got in touch with me due to her babies' slow weight gain. She is an experienced breastfeeder and trained peer supporter and was already expressing and topping up both babies with her milk.

The problem was that despite seeing several health professionals, no-one had reviewed the amount of milk the babies needed or assessed how well they were feeding at the breast. So we talked about those things, how to compensate for the smaller twin's inefficient feeding, options for topping up, and I was able to lend her a hospital grade pump for maximum pumping efficiency. We also talked about adding high-calorie formula for the smaller twin, who was finding things a little more challenging. As you can see, weight gain got back on track quite quickly, and this mum was then able to reduce top ups and get to exclusively breastfeeding. (Both weight charts follow a similar pattern).

None of this was particularly complicated, but just needed someone with the time and knowledge to really look at what was happening, and support this mum working hard towards her goal.

Even better, this visit was funded by the charity. "

Bftwinsuk charity are aiming to cover the whole UK with a network of IBCLCs. We are not far off doing this. But if you are an IBCLC in private practice, drop us an email at info@breastfeedingtwinsandtriplets.co.uk to find out more.

And for UK and Ireland based families, join our facebook group to access support, online and in person.
